Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: -----as a result of the fact that some important and significant visitors have arrived in our country today. We are going to examine how the crisis can be solved within the eurozone. The British, who have their own problems at present, also availed of IMF funding in the 1960s in order to extricate themselves from the difficulties they were then experiencing. Ireland is one of the governors...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: What is required is greater positivity and more time. We need another two years to solve the problems we face and we require support from the Opposition in this regard. What is also required is another Tallaght strategy.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: I advise Senators to obtain copies of the speech made by Mr. Denis O'Brien on 12 November last at the National Convention Centre on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Hibernian College, which was founded by Dr. Sean Rowland. Mr. O'Brien used the occasion to outline Ireland's future. Dr. Noel Kelly of Kentz International, which has a turnover of €1 billion per year, also made a speech...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: I would welcome a debate on what is going to happen - particularly when the relevant decisions have been made - to this country in the future. I would much prefer to rely on our neighbours in Europe than to rely on the bondholders. Ireland has adequate funding until July next, so let us take a positive stance.

Seanad: Credit Institutions (Eligible Liabilities Guarantee) (Amendment) (No. 2) Scheme 2010: Motion (17 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Áine Brady, on what is a difficult day for Ireland. Although the position is extremely difficult, I believe the Minister for Finance, Deputy Brian Lenihan, the Taoiseach and the Government are the right people at the right time to deal with this issue. It is an international, national and European problem and Ireland is in a very difficult position....

Seanad: Death of Member: Expressions of Sympathy (17 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: This week would have marked Kieran's birthday and Members pay tribute to him following his untimely death in May. I entered the Seanad on the same day as Kieran and, like all Members, he was extremely proud and privileged to be here. I extend my deepest sympathy to his wife, Mary, and children, Fiona, Martina, Patrick, Aisling and Brenda, as well as to his wonderful grandson, Noah, who I...

Seanad: Chemicals (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second Stage (16 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister of State with responsibility for labour affairs and public service transformation, Deputy Calleary. I also welcome the introduction of the Chemicals (Amendment) Bill 2010. The Minister of State has been extremely active in ensuring that European directives are transposed into Irish law. It is important that we should comply in the context of such transposition,...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: It is appropriate that we refer today to the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. In fact, there is a commemoration today in Glasnevin Cemetery. This country has reached a stage of maturity where people can recognise what happened at that difficult time and the number of people who sacrificed their lives for a cause about which they were very sincere. I support...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: This is a matter of national importance, not something about which we can be flippant. We must counteract the statements being made by the international media and the person to do it is either the Taoiseach or the Minister for Finance. He can allay the fears of this investor in New York, a genuine Irishman who has invested money in Roscommon but who is concerned. I am allaying his fears...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Nov 2010)

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: Will the Leader investigate when the Colm McCarthy report on the sale of national assets is expected to be before the Government? I hope we will have a debate on the question of our national assets, including Dublin Airport, ports and so on. We must examine everything in terms of what we can sell to raise funds internationally. We should have a debate on the sale of local authority houses....

Seanad: EU Directive on Temporary Agency Work: Statements (10 Nov 2010)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Calleary, and wish him continued success in his important Ministry and meeting the other responsibilities thrown on top of him. He has broad shoulders on which to carry them to achieve success on 25 November. The directive was debated in 2008 and agreed in 2009 and is being implemented as fast as possible in the House. However, introducing legislation...

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister of State. Deputy Roche, and compliment him on his work in the European Union. He is one of the most experienced senior Ministers in the European Union. I have seen him attending many key meetings. I am pleased to have an opportunity to discuss the recent European Council meeting. Such meetings are incredibly important both for our country and the future well-being of...
