Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Regional Airports (15 Dec 2020)

Hildegarde Naughton: I hear what the Deputy said. The Government fully recognises and acknowledges the contribution Sligo Airport makes to the search and rescue service. However, CHC Ireland, as the operator, is fully responsible for agreeing operational arrangements with all the airports involved in the delivery of the search and rescue service, including Dublin, Waterford, Shannon and Sligo. In that context,...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Regional Airports (15 Dec 2020)

Hildegarde Naughton: I thank the Deputy for the opportunity to speak about Sligo Airport. As she will be aware, Sligo Airport is a private company based in Strandhill. As well as general aviation services, the airport operates as a Coast Guard search and rescue base under a commercial contract with CHC Ireland. The Department of Transport contracts for the delivery of the search and rescue service to CHC...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Covid-19 Pandemic Supports (15 Dec 2020)

Hildegarde Naughton: My Department does not operate any such grant or support schemes for car rental firms. Car rental firms are private companies, and the Government, as part of their general response to the Covid-19 crisis, has introduced a range of measures for ALL companies whose business is directly affected by the pandemic. I understand that these measures can be applied for through Enterprise Ireland.

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Driver Licences (15 Dec 2020)

Hildegarde Naughton: In response to the Covid-19 crisis, those 70 years of age have been invited to renew their licence or permit by post. Previously only those aged 70 and over who renew their licence on a yearly basis were invited to renew it by post. As a temporary measure, given the situation with Covid-19, the Road Safety Authority (RSA), through the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS), has expanded the...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Driver Licences (15 Dec 2020)

Hildegarde Naughton: All driving licences that expired between 1 March and 31 August 2020 were extended for 7 months. New licence cards were not issued, but the extension period is reflected on the driver's electronic licence record. The extended date is now the new expiry date of the licence. Hildegarde Naughton: My Department is in constant contact with the Road Safety Authority since the start of the pandemic regarding all of its services, the impact of Covid-19 on those services, and how they can best be maintained in the current circumstances. Hildegarde Naughton: After the 31 December 2020, a driving licence issued by the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland) held by an Irish resident will no longer be recognised as a valid licence to drive in Ireland. Since early 2019, holders of UK licences resident in Ireland have been encouraged to exchange their UK licences for an Irish one. Legislation exists to allow for the recognition of foreign...

Under the law, a licence and insurance are required for...

Written Answers — Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Driver Licences (10 Dec 2020)

Hildegarde Naughton: It is not possible to hold both a UK and Irish driving licence. The process of moving from a UK licence to an Irish licence is an exchange programme; the UK licence must be surrendered and exchanged for an Irish driving licence.  This is no more than the obvious corollary that drivers are required to obtain a driving licence in their country of residence, under EU law.  There...

Written Answers — Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Brexit Issues (10 Dec 2020)

Hildegarde Naughton: There is no way to establish how many people living in Ireland hold a UK licence; however, the Road Safety Authority estimates that there may be as many as 15,000 people who have yet to exchange their UK licence for an Irish licence before the deadline of 31 December. Driving licences issued by the Member States of the European Union are mutually recognised. Therefore, a holder of an EU...
