Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: Is that something An Post has set out as procedure?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I will make the following suggestion. Rather than it being a general discussion I ask An Post to be quite specific on what it can do. Anything that assists people with passports is helpful. An Post is in the community and it is online. This is something we would take up and follow up with the Department of Foreign Affairs as An Post falls directly under our line as a semi-State body. An...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: If An Post does that straight away, it is something we would proactively take up. We will take up anything that proactively assists people. People are under such pressure with passports and Ms Byrne is correct that even when they apply online, they still have to get the consent form.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: In many cases the post office could provide a validation check on photographs. We have to retain the integrity of the passport application process. These are the types of services that we have to look outside the box with. I ask An Post to give us a proposal and let us follow it up with the Department of Foreign Affairs on its behalf. We will look to be constructive and proactive on this.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: That would make a huge difference. We will follow up on this again. There needs to be speed and efficiency in coming up with the details on the package for postmasters; that is vital.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Future of An Post Network: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: We thank all the postmasters and staff of An Post for the phenomenal work they do for the public. During the pandemic every household got to know their post delivery person, man or woman, invariably with a parcel for a daughter or son that was purchased online. I am familiar with it and they were working seven days per week. I thank Ms Byrne and Mr. Watt for assisting the committee in...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Transport Costs (14 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: The Minister of State spoke about the scheme being extended to commercial bus services. When does she anticipate that will happen? This scheme is for those aged between 19 and 23. Many young people have left college and are starting or already working in their first jobs. There are various categories of young people. Will the Minister of State consider extending this scheme to include...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Transport Costs (14 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: Obviously, we cannot expect decisions to be made today, but will the Minister of State commit to speaking with her colleague, the Minister, Deputy Eamon Ryan, about extending the age groups covered by the scheme? It could have significant value if it was extended to those aged up to 25. The Minister of State spoke about extending the general scheme, which includes the 20% PSO fare...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Transport Costs (14 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I am asking about the initiatives that have reduced public transport fares, especially the initiative to extend half-price public transport for young people. That is effectively 70%, because it is 50% after a 20% general reduction. Is the Department giving consideration to extending that to other age groups, such as young adults who have just left college and are taking up their first jobs?...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Transport (14 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: 63. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will retain the reduced public transport fares to help with the cost of living in 2023; if he has further considered reducing public transport fares; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [30734/22]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Transport (14 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I am taking Questions Nos. 63 and 122 in substitute for my colleague, Deputy Carroll MacNeill.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Transport (14 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: Is it fair, a Chathaoirligh GnĂomhaigh, that I take Question No. 63 on its own, that Deputy Farrell take Question No. 106 and that I then take Question No. 122 separately, which is six and a half minutes per slot?

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Transport (14 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I thank the Cathaoirleach GnĂomhach. I wish to deal with what I regard as a very successful policy initiative on public transport where we have seen a 20% reduction in public fares. This has been a great success. I have two questions. First, will the Minister of State look to extending the scheme beyond the end of 2022 and certainly into 2023? Second, has the Minister of State...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Transport (14 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: I greatly welcome the commitment from Government and from the Minister for Transport to look towards extending the reduced public transport fares into 2023. This is a very welcome initiative both in the 20% general reduction and for the young adults, where that is effectively a 60% reduction because it is 50% after the 20%. In my own constituency of Limerick City, adult fares have gone...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (1 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: The Minister for Health, together with the HSE, appointed an expert team to look at the urgent situation at University Hospital Limerick. That review started on Friday, 13 May and will conclude on Friday, 10 June. We are more than two weeks into the process this week. Yet, when I look at the figures since the review commenced, the numbers for the emergency department have gone up. The...

Kieran O'Donnell: The purpose of the meeting today is to consider the extreme delays recently experienced by passengers at Dublin Airport and the detailed plans and solutions of the Dublin Airport Authority, DAA, to address this. I am pleased to welcome Mr. Dalton Philips, chief executive officer, CEO, of the DAA, who is accompanied by Mr. Gary McLean, deputy managing director, Dublin Airport; Ms Catherine...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Delays at Dublin Airport: Discussion (1 Jun 2022)

Kieran O'Donnell: You might give a quick outline for the public.
