- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Registration of Short-Term Tourist Letting Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2023)
Shane Cassells: Mr. O'Mara Walsh made a point about the difference between the Bill and the planning regulations and having sight of the latter. I want to put something on the record that I also said to Ms Ní Mhurchú and others at that meeting with the operators, which is that I do not want see the Bill frustrated either because there is a lot of good in it in terms of the registration and seeing...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Registration of Short-Term Tourist Letting Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2023)
Shane Cassells: I thank Ms Mayer.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: Regarding sport, media and Dr. May's submission regarding the future of media and the future sport, the future of sport is an integral part of the debate in respect of the commercialisation of sport and the media as the medium by which to facilitate that. Everything is driven by one thing, which is television revenue. That has pumped millions into sport and done much good but there can...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: I ask because in her opening statement, Dr. May spoke of Sport Ireland, as a statutory body, having a partnership with the national broadcaster. That broadcaster has an arrangement with the League of Ireland. If a top club like Shamrock Rovers, to fulfil the need for EU-27 involvement in this, was tempted by money, I would be interested, from the point of view of spectators and people who...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: The point is the national bodies are being bypassed. It will end up in the European Court of Justice because they want to bypass the national bodies and make the clubs stand-alone.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: Okay. Moving back to sports in this country more generally, we have been dealing with different bodies and the communication of their messages. For sports bodies, TV money drives a lot of this. In recent years, the GAA has come in for exceptional criticism, unjustified to my mind, for its relationship with Sky; other pillar sports did not come in for such criticism and escaped it. It was...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: They are and they are not. I have read through the Teneo report that was submitted to us, which refers to media coverage. If people see the heroes they look up to participate, that drives engagement, which I am sure interests Sport Ireland. For example, Dr. May touched on female participation in sport. The progress of the Meath ladies football team in the last couple of years in breaking...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: A big thing discussed here in recent years was the lack of female sports being broadcast or in print media. We have had all the pillar organisations in here representing their ladies' sections. If we do not get media coverage, it will not drive recruitment. In the report Sport Ireland sent us, we saw statistics that 40% of women’s sports received sufficient coverage in 2018 and 81%...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: On that point, I sit on the Ladies' Gaelic Football Association's national development committee. At a meeting in Croke Park a couple of weeks ago, we heard there is a 20% drop-out rate among those between the ages of 15 and 21, which is shocking. In trying to address that, we must have retention. There is a surge in participation but we are seeing a large drop-out rate in later teen years.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: On the point about commentary and presenting, I congratulate Jacqui Hurley on her appointment as presenter of "The Sunday Game". She is an excellent journalist who joins Joanne Cantwell on the programme. They are both excellent journalists. I know we have other witnesses present, but I ask the Cathaoirleach to invite Dr. May back for a separate session on participation because the drop-out...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: I welcome the fact that Sport Ireland is represented today but I want to continue the conversation on pillar sports. If we do not have this conversation, we will lose out in terms of its responsibility to the broader public. Of course, these are stand-alone bodies and they can conduct their own business and accounts. I would not tell them what to do. However, Sport Ireland announced...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future of the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: There have been improvements in that regard.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: The Hill of Tara, a 5,000-year-old national monument in the heart of Meath, was attacked by vandals on Monday night, the third time in ten years this has happened. Some amadán took it upon himself or herself to print graffiti on the Lia Fáil, the Stone of Destiny where high kings were crowned for thousands of years. The amadán daubed the word "fake" on all four sides. The...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: I welcome all the witnesses. There were interesting presentations from four diverse sets of witnesses but there was probably a central theme across all four as well. Mr. Gordon pointed out how young people's engagement with and consumption of media is much different from what went before. If one were to ask many young people whether they buy a newspaper or watch terrestrial television,...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: That is a fair point. I pay tribute to RTÉ, which celebrated the anniversary of news2day recently. Is it the case that some of the traditional media - print and visual - maybe ignoring a sector of society? I might ask Ms Chadamoyo Makombe this too. Ultimately, they are businesses. Ms Murphy made the point about consumption of traditional media among those aged 55 years and over...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: I want to ask Ms Chadomoyo Makombe about herself and her peers and their consumption of news. Do they find that their voice is reflected?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: Ms Murphy was speaking about the other end of the spectrum. A report entitled Telling It Like It Is; Combatting Ageism was launched here last week. Before Covid 45% of people in Ireland aged 50 years and over said they felt discriminated against because of their age. One wonders what that figure might be today. Media organisations see a captive audience in their traditional audience, but...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: Is that purely in visual media or is it across the media, including print?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: That is really interesting. We often see it in RTÉ news reports on older people, when they do the shot of just focusing on someone's hands. It is a simple thing like that. My next question is for Dr. Casey and Ms Brack. The issues are different but it is still on the theme of inclusion. Dr. Casey touched on not wanting to be stereotypically portrayed. Is that purely visual? How...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Feb 2023)
Shane Cassells: That was one of the finest engagements and answers. I hope the media that are covering this committee meeting will reflect on the fact Dr. Casey stated it was a creative time and that was not reflected in the media and hear Dr. Casey's voice clearly. That is why he is here.
