- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (13 Feb 2024)
Martin Conway: Following on from Senator Murphy’s contribution regarding the importance of radio, I wish to add to it the importance of regional journalism and print journalism. I received an email from a 17-year-old young lady from County Clare, Isabella Danaher, who has had articles published in local newspapers at home and who aspires to be a journalist. She has also won awards in the whole...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Feb 2024)
Martin Conway: Like others, I want to raise the issue of the emergency department in UHL. It is shocking that this situation is continuing. I do not blame anybody for it yet everybody can be blamed for it. Something really does need to be done. It is a crisis. It is embarrassing. It is not good for our society and it is certainly not good for the sick people in the mid-west. A debate here on the...

- Seanad: Death of Former Taoiseach: Expressions of Sympathy (7 Feb 2024)
Martin Conway: I too stand today to salute a great Irishman, a great statesman and a great human being. I first met John Bruton when I was a student in UCD studying politics and economics back in the early 1990s before he went into government. The one thing about being a member of Young Fine Gael in UCD was that the leader seemed to pop in a lot. He had a huge regard for young people. He went into...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Health Needs of Persons with Dementia and the Services Available: Discussion (7 Feb 2024)
Martin Conway: I thank both organisations for coming in here and for the work that they do. Certainly the information they imparted this morning is very helpful. There was a scenario in my home town about ten years ago where a very distinguished and successful businessman who had no family or immediate relatives, certainly not in Ireland, got dementia. It was extremely sad to see how he deteriorated,...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Health Needs of Persons with Dementia and the Services Available: Discussion (7 Feb 2024)
Martin Conway: That is very encouraging. It would have been an even worse situation, but for his neighbours, back then. For somebody who had no family to advocate for him, as he did not, how are the connections made? How does one deal with a situation where, for example, a bachelor is living on his own and people realise he has dementia? How does the connection happen?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Health Needs of Persons with Dementia and the Services Available: Discussion (7 Feb 2024)
Martin Conway: I have a follow-up question. My colleague, Deputy Durkan, asked about medicines. We always have to be ambitious. There are conditions that existed in the past that do not exist any more because of the advancement of medicines. Certainly medicines are important. What kind of a timeline are we looking at? These two key drugs have not yet been approved by the European Medicines Agency....

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Health Needs of Persons with Dementia and the Services Available: Discussion (7 Feb 2024)
Martin Conway: I just checked the clock and I have 50 seconds left. It is great to hear about the research. We often hear about research being done with nothing achieved from it. That is very encouraging. I agree with Ms Whelan that we have some phenomenal academics in health research in this country. We are leading the way internationally in many disciplines. It is very encouraging to hear what is...
