Brendan Ryan: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption: Motion. (7 May 2003)

Brendan Ryan: There are already certain things for sale in pubs that cannot be used there.

Seanad: Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption: Motion. (7 May 2003)

Brendan Ryan: It is particularly good to have had a full two hour debate. I thought at one stage that we would not but it has been shown that Members take this issue very seriously. I wish to quote from the executive summary of the Health and Safety Authority on tobacco control. It concludes that environmental tobacco smoke is carcinogenic and causes lung cancer, heart disease and respiratory problems in...

Seanad: Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption: Motion. (7 May 2003)

Brendan Ryan: Tourism is New York's second largest industry and surviving a ban which will in the short term give rise to a problem. Somebody said the Luxembourgers drink more than we do. They may but one will not find the scenes of appalling disorder on the streets of Luxembourg on a Saturday night that one finds here. It is our form of drinking that is becoming a problem. We will have to deal with this....

Seanad: Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption: Motion. (7 May 2003)

Brendan Ryan: I can see only two references. I would like to withdraw the reference to "immediate" in the phrase, "demands that the Minister for Health and Children implement an immediate ban on smoking in licensed premises". There is a second reference to "immediate" later on, but that does not make any difference.

Seanad: Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption: Motion. (7 May 2003)

Brendan Ryan: No, but I will withdraw, quite happily, the word "immediate" in the three places it is used in our motion.

Seanad: Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption: Motion. (7 May 2003)

Brendan Ryan: No, we are being reasonable.

Seanad: Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption: Motion. (7 May 2003)

Brendan Ryan: I will put before the House the motion with the word "immediate" deleted in the three places it is used.

Seanad: Northern Ireland: Statements. (16 Apr 2003)

Brendan Ryan: I was not here yesterday or this morning because I was in Geneva, at a UN human rights conference. The conference was held in the United Nations building, which formerly housed the League of Nations. It is a formidable structure, a classic 1930s building on a huge scale. It is worth remembering what happened to the League of Nations, in spite of all the optimism which Ireland, through Éamon...

Seanad: Central Mental Hospital: Motion. (16 Apr 2003)

Brendan Ryan: If the Minister of State remembers them, he was not there.

Seanad: Central Mental Hospital: Motion. (16 Apr 2003)

Brendan Ryan: I suppose I had better say first that I am married to a consultant psychiatrist. Since we are talking about the issue, I had better declare an interest. I am not sure my wife would regard me has having much interest, but nevertheless the proprieties are correctly expected of me. Not wanting to be flippant, I enjoy the way Government uses different sets of units to magnify things. For...

Seanad: Central Mental Hospital: Motion. (16 Apr 2003)

Brendan Ryan: I have a reasonably good idea myself. I note the Minister of State, Deputy Parlon, talks about his new development in square feet because that sounds much bigger than if the figure was set out in square metres, but that is only an aside.

Seanad: Central Mental Hospital: Motion. (16 Apr 2003)

Brendan Ryan: The Minister of State spent years doing that and he knows he has impressed me. We have had many an interesting and lively discussion in other fora. I do not agree with the Minister of State about many issues but I have a very high opinion of him. That is entirely possible and I enjoy such relations with many people. I am disappointed at the tone of the Minister of State's response, and it is...

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Apr 2003)

Brendan Ryan: In no way do I wish to question the decision of the Leas-Chathaoirleach on the Adjournment Matters but both Houses have something to sort out. If Ministers are not responsible for matters, they should be decent enough to stay away from official openings for which they eschew all responsibility. It the Minister for Transport is to open every single road in the country, he cannot tell the...

Seanad: Official Languages (Equality) Bill 2002: Committee Stage (Resumed). SECTION 9. (9 Apr 2003)

Brendan Ryan: Caithfidh mé mo leithscéal a ghabháil don Teach ós rud é nach raibh mé anseo. An bhfuil sé de cheart agam fós Gaelainn a labhairt nó an é go bhfuil cead agam? Tá difríocht bunúsach idir an dá fhocal agus tchím nuair nach raibh mé anseo gur athraíodh an Bille. An mbeidh sé de cheart agam Gaelainn a labhairt nó an bhfuil orm cead a fháil chun príomhtheanga na tíre a...

Seanad: Official Languages (Equality) Bill 2002: Committee Stage (Resumed). SECTION 9. (9 Apr 2003)

Brendan Ryan: B'fhéidir go mbeidh an tAire ábalta a mhíniú dom conas gur féidir an dá fhealsúnacht a chur le chéile. Tá athrú bunúsach curtha isteach in ionad alt 8 agus anois tá próiseas fada ann le "seirbhísí a bheartaíonn an comhlacht poiblí a chur i láthair trí mheán na Gaeilge amháin, trí mheán an Bhéarla amháin agus trí mheán na Gaeilge agus an Bhéarla araon". Má tá...

Seanad: Official Languages (Equality) Bill 2002: Committee Stage (Resumed). SECTION 9. (9 Apr 2003)

Brendan Ryan: Is minic a bhíonn.

Seanad: Official Languages (Equality) Bill 2002: Committee Stage (Resumed). SECTION 9. (9 Apr 2003)

Brendan Ryan: Tá ceist amháin agam don Aire. B'fhéidir gur ormsa atá an locht toisc nach dtuigim, ach cá bhfuil sé sa Bhille go soiléir go bhfuil sé de chead agamsa comhfhreagras a dhéanamh le gach eagraíocht Stáit agus comhfhreagras a fháil thar n-ais chomh maith? Tá teach samhraidh agam i gceartlár fíor-Ghaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne. I mBéarla amháin a bhí litir a fuair mé ón bPost ag...
