Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Regional and Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (23 Oct 2018)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Nothing has been done. Files have been requested from the Department. There was a commitment that this would be done within a certain length of time from the Government taking office. People have requested files and from the information received, the Department has done nothing on the matter. Why is there a blank on the west of Ireland under the TEN-T programme?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Regional and Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (23 Oct 2018)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Why was it not done in that time? Why are we talking about it two and a half years later and talking about 2023? That commitment was given in the programme for Government. Why has the Department not done so?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Rural and Community Development: Regional and Rural Transport Policy: Discussion (23 Oct 2018)

Michael Fitzmaurice: It is obviously not that big of a priority when it relates to the west of Ireland because every other priority has been done. Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Engagement with Chairman of Teagasc (23 Oct 2018)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I am thankful for the opportunity to speak. I wish the best of luck to the chairman designate. I would like to know his thoughts on the beef genomics scheme and on the stocking rate given the current position on beef. What are his thoughts on the factory feed lots? Is the market being distorted? Teagasc does a lot of research and, in fairness to it, it is very good at it. I have spoken...

Michael Fitzmaurice: I welcome the witnesses, most of whom I have known for a good while. We know what is needed. We know what medicine is required in rural parts of Ireland. We have seen the new land agency and Mr. Farrell and Mr. Johnson are here from the credit unions. My understanding is that credit unions are not allowed to lend money in the new land agency context. That shows the unwillingness to even...
