- Seanad: Child Care (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second and Subsequent Stages (13 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: I warmly welcome the Minister to the House. I will take this opportunity to commend her on her 18 to 19 months of work on the children referendum, which had been sought and requested for many years. It was vital, not just to get the issue over the line, but in terms of public discussion on the matter. It was great to see children's interests so focused in the minds of the media,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: Well said.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: I wish to raise an important issue that was highlighted on world epilepsy day last Monday, namely, that 50% of Ireland's population still believes that a stigma is associated with epilepsy and that one in every five people would not hire someone who suffers from epilepsy. This is a serious matter in 2013. It has to do with the perception of people with disabilities and their ability to do a...

- Seanad: Taxi Regulation Bill 2012: Committee Stage (12 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: Briefly, it is great to see that the Senators from Trinity are so united. I will reiterate a point I have made previously, which is that Senator Barrett's forensic knowledge of transport economics is something I admire hugely. In his contribution, Senator Norris referred to the overly-restricted taxi practices before deregulation. and the position in Dublin at that time was an absolute...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: Senator Leyden is interfering between church and State.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: I too, like the vast majority of people, was horrified and disgusted with what I saw on the television programme "Inside Irish Nationwide" last night. It is a good reminder for people everywhere as to what went on in this country-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: ------for the past ten to 15 years. It is also a good reminder of the mess we must clean up as a society, and of the over-indulgence and appalling waste of a valuable commodity, namely, money. I ask the Leader to again request a banking inquiry in the State. It is appalling to think that no banker in this State has gone to prison yet for what has happened in terms of the reckless behaviour...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: -----and threatened with eviction and repossession. On the one hand, there was an exuberant element in society that spent money like it was going out of fashion on champagne, wine and the addition of a million here or there to a sale. On the other hand, families are being run out of their homes because they are ¤15,000 or ¤20,000 in arrears. We must get real as a society. Everyone who...

- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: Last night we did not have an ideal amount of time yet we still had quality and discussion with the Minister were informative. Some feisty contributions, particularly from Senator Hayden, captured the moment. I sincerely hope that the urgency that appropriately applied to this legislation will apply also to finding a solution for the victims of the desperate scandal that was the Magdalen...
- Seanad: Irish Bank Resolution Corporation Bill 2013: Committee and Remaining Stages (6 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: I have two brief questions. First, was there much discussion with NAMA regarding this measure? Second, in terms of customers of Anglo or IBRC who may be in negotiations about distressed mortgages, I presume that process will continue as normal and that this legislation will not affect negotiations that clients who may be in financial difficulty will have with this new entity.
- Seanad: Irish Bank Resolution Corporation Bill 2013: Committee and Remaining Stages (6 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister and commend him on a considered night's work. The legislation and the sections that we are dealing with are essential and are in the national interest. While the Bill could be classified as emergency legislation certainly it is not a knee-jerk reaction. It is a calm and well thought out, well prepared and well considered piece of legislation which has become active...
- Seanad: Irish Bank Resolution Corporation Bill 2013: Committee and Remaining Stages (6 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: Yes. In this case the legislation was well planned, well organised and properly and effectively thought out. I would like the Minister to comment on whether the Supreme Court case in the morning will have an effect on the negotiations.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Review of Legislation on Prostitution: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Feb 2013)
Martin Conway: Mr. Maguire's statistics were staggering. I watched the programme in 2011 and commend the very professional way in which he and his team conducted it. Both he and the superintendent spoke about mobile phones. One can walk into a mobile phone shop and buy a SIM card very easily. There is no identification required, whereas abroad, in some jurisdictions, when one buys a pre-paid phone or a...
