Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: Because they push up house prices and make it more difficult for people to buy.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: Distract and deflect. What about renters in this State?

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: Distract and deflect.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: Rents will rise. House prices will rise. Homelessness will rise.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: That is what we get when Fianna Fáil is in government.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: It has never been more expensive or stressful to be a renter than under this Government. For three long years, rents have risen to levels never thought possible. The latest Residential Tenancies Board, RTB, report shows rents rising last year by almost 7%. Since the Government took office, rents have increased by a staggering 23%. This is €3,500 more per year for the average new...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: The Minister said you cannot solve this problem in a week, in a month or overnight. Indeed you cannot, but his party has been propping up Fine Gael for seven years, and Fine Gael has been in government for 11 years. How long do you need to tackle this crisis? Not only is the Government failing renters, the Minister stands here and gaslights them, because none of those policies he outlined...

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Committee Stage (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: I move amendment No. 1: In page 17, line 18, to delete “Historic and Archaeological Heritage Act 2023” and substitute “Historic, Archaeological and Cultural Heritage and National Monuments Act 2023”. I apologise to the Minister of State for keeping him waiting. He understands, I suppose, the background to this amendment. It was discussed at the earlier...

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Committee Stage (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: I have just one comment. I do not see how broadening the content of the Title of the Bill would narrow its scope in any manner. What it really does is make much more explicit the range of things the Bill seeks to promote and protect. I understand, however, that the Minister of State will not accept the amendment. I will press it.

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Committee Stage (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: Amendment No. 69 is pretty self-explanatory. It seeks to commission a report by the Minister within six months of the enactment of the legislation on the merits of logistical requirements for establishing a dedicated ombudsman for the culture and heritage sector. I will press the amendment.

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Committee Stage (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: In line with the previous amendment, these are also report requests. One relates to the consistency of the national development plan with heritage and policy obligations, including the sustainable development goals and climate action plan objectives. The other relates to reviewing the consistency of the Act, obviously, with the Valletta Convention given the importance of that international...

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Committee Stage (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: First, the Minister of State's amendment No. 288 does not deal with the real intention of our amendment No. 69, which is with regard to the need for an ombudsman for the culture and heritage sector. There is no mechanism under the Bill for people to submit complaints to an independent office when public bodies fail in their obligations. We know that happens far too often. There is a real...

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Committee Stage (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: I was going to say that because I think it is quite important.

Select Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Committee Stage (29 Jun 2023)

Eoin Ó Broin: With respect to amendments Nos. 13, 18 and 22, I suspect the Senators who the Minister of State discussed these matters with will probably be less than satisfied with his propositions, but given that they have to go back to the Seanad I will let the Minister of State fight that out with them at a later Stage. I am keen to hear, very briefly, the Minister of State's response to my amendment...
