EU-IMF Programme: Statements (Resumed) (5 May 2011)

Joan Collins: Yes, everything over €100,000 at 95%. That would bring a massive amount of money into the economy. We are in a serious situation. We are in a crisis situation and those who have the money should be putting into the economy what they need to over the next period of time rather than the Government coming back repeatedly to the blind, the disabled and the low-paid worker. There should be...

EU-IMF Programme: Statements (Resumed) (5 May 2011)

Joan Collins: I would be interested to hear what the Government has to say in this regard, and whether it will continue dipping into pockets of ordinary people or turn its face to the wealthy who have not contributed to the resolution of this crisis.

EU-IMF Programme: Statements (Resumed) (5 May 2011)

Joan Collins: I did not say that.

Residential Mortgage Debt: Motion (Resumed) (4 May 2011)

Joan Collins: I noted from the Minister's contribution yesterday that no mention was made of Fine Gael's election commitments in the programme for Government. One of the commitments proposed introducing special relief for those who bought homes between 2004 and 2008 within 100 days of taking office. Measures were also promised to force lenders to reduce variable rates by 0.25% within 100 days. There is...

Special Educational Needs (4 May 2011)

Joan Collins: Question 10: To ask the Minister for Education and Skills his views on his decision to maintain the cap on special needs assistants implemented by the previous Government.; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9891/11]

Special Educational Needs (4 May 2011)

Joan Collins: I thank the Minister for the standard reply. The last Government's decision to cap the number of SNAs in schools was disgraceful. Even heretofore it was difficult to get their children assessed, to get them into schools and to get the SNAs that are needed. Now they are being told that because of economic constraints their children may not and will not have that support in the future. The...

Special Educational Needs (4 May 2011)

Joan Collins: The Minister has choices like everybody else. The cost of employing the required 2,000 SNAs would be €60 million, of which €40 million would be saved on social welfare payments. Really it would cost €20 million to employ 2,000 more SNAs, which is a drop in the ocean. The Minister should consider that alternative. The cost of subsidising private fee-paying schools teachers is €100...

Special Educational Needs (4 May 2011)

Joan Collins: Will the Minister not stop paying these teachers in private fee-paying schools and put that €100 million into employing resource teachers who are absolutely needed?

Special Educational Needs (4 May 2011)

Joan Collins: I cannot accept that. The Minister has a choice and can stop paying teachers in fee-paying schools thereby saving the State €100 million, which could be put into providing badly needed SNAs and resource teachers. The choice is between protecting people and keeping privileged schools going.

Suicide Prevention: Statements (Resumed) (3 May 2011)

Joan Collins: I wish to share my time with Deputy Seamus Healy.

Suicide Prevention: Statements (Resumed) (3 May 2011)

Joan Collins: I join Deputy Griffin in sympathising with all those affected by suicide. We must address the nitty-gritty of the problem. There is a distinct link between the economic downturn, especially the rise in unemployment, and suicide. Amnesty International has made this very clear. It seems likely that the increase in the suicide rate is primarily a result of the impact of the economic downturn...

Order of Business (3 May 2011)

Joan Collins: Does the Taoiseach agree that it is absolutely necessary to have a debate in the Dáil in the next few days on the recent revelations about the children's hospitals in Crumlin, Temple Street and Tallaght? The theatres in these hospitals have been underused. The Meridian report, commissioned by the HSE, has not yet been released. Ten beds in St. Joseph's Ward have been closed in the...

Cystic Fibrosis Services (21 Apr 2011)

Joan Collins: On Wednesday morning, during Leaders' Questions, Deputy Finian McGrath sought clarification from the Taoiseach on the statement issued by the HSE last Wednesday week that the 34 promised isolation beds for cystic fibrosis patients in the new unit at St. Vincent's hospital were to be reduced to 20. This statement was issued by the Department after the "Prime Time" programme on Wednesday...
