- Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: I mentioned yesterday that the selection of the new chairperson for the policing authority is not an independent selection, and the manner in which the selection process took place leaves much be desired. If we are not going to get an independent police authority, we would be better without a police authority. The Government is about to choose a new Garda Commissioner.
- Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: Given the latest Garda Inspectorate report, if the Government picks somebody from the existing hierarchy and continues its politicisation of the Garda Síochána in Ireland, nothing will change in how policing is done.
- Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: The former Garda Commissioner might be gone, as well as the former Minister, Deputy Shatter, but nothing else will have changed. The Government is not demonstrating any appetite for real reform of the Garda Síochána.
- Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: A few minutes ago, the Tánaiste said that big new projects would always experience problems. This is true, but Irish Water is probably one of the big projects that should not have started. When the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Deputy Brendan Howlin, said we would look back and be proud of it one of these days, I wondered what land he was living in. The Tánaiste...
- Written Answers — Department of Children and Youth Affairs: Ombudsman for Children Remit (19 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: 13. To ask the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs his plans to permit the Ombudsman for Children to take complaints from children affected by the direct provision system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [43963/14]
- Written Answers — Department of Health: Hospital Consultants Recruitment (19 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: 139. To ask the Minister for Health if he will provide a progress update on the recruitment process for a consultant dermatologist in Waterford Regional Hospital; when the promised replacement dermatology clinics will be operational in South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital in County Cork in order to deal with patients from the south-east region; and if he will make a statement on the...
- Written Answers — Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources: Electricity Generation (19 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: 178. To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources the reasoning behind the closure of the Electric Ireland micro-generation pilot scheme to new customers from 31 December 2014, particularly in view of the fact that micro-generation is more affordable and has a much lower carbon footprint than traditional forms of energy generation; and if he will make a statement on...
- Leaders' Questions (18 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: The Taoiseach knows well that the protests have been overwhelmingly peaceful. Why did he not make an issue of the woman who was thrown against a lamp post outside the Mansion House?
- Leaders' Questions (18 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: That does not seem to concern the Taoiseach nearly as much. The Government has lost the plot.
- Leaders' Questions (18 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: The Taoiseach said he had listened to the people. Had he done so, the Government would not have been back-pedalling for the past two months. It would have abolished the water charges and consigned Irish Water to the dustbin of history, where it belongs. It is a structure that will not work properly and if the Taoiseach does not abolish it, somebody else will. It is not fit for purpose....
- Leaders' Questions (18 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: How, in God’s name, can the Taoiseach say he has any appetite for reform? He has appointed an insider to the police authority to ensure he will retain 100% control of it.
- Leaders' Questions (18 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: The Taoiseach talks about working towards having a fairer society. Why did the budget favour the better-off?
- Leaders' Questions (18 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: Why does the Taoiseach continue to waste money on Irish Water and stand over the indefensible? He should abolish Irish Water and save the State a fortune.
- Leaders' Questions (18 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: The Taoiseach said at the weekend that the protests were about more than water. I believe he is right. In February 2011, we were told that by the end of this Government's term in office, Ireland would be recognised as a modern, fair, socially inclusive and equal society. Cuts to rent supplement, child benefit, back to school and footwear allowance and respite care grants are just a few of...

Mick Wallace: 117. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality the policy reasons for her decision to retain ministerial control of policing in the same hierarchical arrangement, to include the political appointment and protection of both the Garda Commissioner and head of the policing authority; if she will set out in detail the process being applied to the two appointments; and if she will make a...
- Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Oversight (18 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: 122. - Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Policing Authority Establishment (18 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: 260. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality her views on putting an independent mechanism in place to deal with the selection of the proposed new policing authority board; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [41138/14]
- Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission Investigations (18 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: 294. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality if she will provide an update on the recommendations that criminal proceedings be issued against a named garda following the investigation by GSOC into the criminal activities of the gardaí who were involved in a case (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [44096/14]
- Other Questions: Defence Forces Deployment (13 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: The Irish troops were involved in advising NATO personnel on bomb disposal. If the Government leaves the troops there for the next phase they will advise Afghani state troops, which will be a very dangerous exercise. It would be like an outsider coming to Ireland during the Civil War and giving Michael Collins’ men advice on bombs. It is just looking for trouble. The Minister...
