Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That is fair enough. It was the idea of the two producers of “The Late Late Toy Show”.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That is fair enough. I just wanted to clarify that. With regard to the car issue, I am sorry to bring this up again and Mr. Lynch might deal with this as I do not want to bring everybody in on it because time is limited, from what I picked up when listening to the debate, Mr. Lynch stated today there was one secret car deal. Is he absolutely satisfied on that? Let us be truthful here....

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That is fair enough. It is not just one secret car deal. Mr. Lynch is obviously holding on that at the moment but there may be more. Am I correct in that?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That information will come to us as quickly as possible.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I have a question for Mr. Lynch and Mr. Shortt. On the basis that Áine Lawlor, Mary Wilson, Darragh Maloney, George Lee and maybe one or two more employees of RTÉ have publicly stated their salaries, do the witnesses not think it would be a good idea for some of the rest to voluntarily give that information, given their colleagues have done it?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Would Mr. Lynch like them to consider it?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: In terms of the public view, I mixed with a lot of people over the weekend. People who have come out and made public their salary, because it is public money, are being well respected by the public. I have the same question for Mr. Shortt, although I do not want to labour it. He is a journalist himself.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Not Mr. Shortt personally.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: This is on the basis that Mr. Shortt's colleagues, George Lee, Bryan Dobson, Mary Wilson, Darragh Maloney and Áine Lawlor have voluntarily come out and said what is their salary. Would Mr. Shortt like to see more of his employee colleagues doing that?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Okay. Again, in regard to what most people would see as the high rate of salaries, we would all be aware of the campaign by RTÉ to seek a licence fee increase and to seek more money. Do the witnesses not think it was extraordinary that RTÉ would still continue to pay this high level of salaries? The witnesses can make the assumption, or they may actually have said to us, that...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I will just make a comment because I know the Chair is under pressure. I will go back to what I said last week and I do not expect any of the panel to answer this. The Minister with responsibility for communications in 2002 recently wrote an article in the Irish Daily Mail- I am going to differ with Moya a little on this - about 20 years ago. In that article - the witnesses can look it up...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I come from a place east of Strokestown called Scramoge. A great thing happened there some years ago. Ours was the town that produced "Bosco", one of the greatest things RTÉ ever did. To this day the programme brings happiness to thousands of children. I know Deputy O'Sullivan talked about his close association with it yesterday but we are very proud of that in our town. It was...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (28 Jun 2023)

Eugene Murphy: First, I congratulate the Cathaoirleach on the two events we had recently. Unfortunately, I was not here for Governor Healey's address yesterday, even though she has south Roscommon and east Galway connections. I had asked for a speaking slot, but something arose and I did not get here. It was nice to see the Governor address the Seanad. I support the Order of Business, as laid out by the...

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I probably rushed the Minister.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2023)

Eugene Murphy: When is it proposed to take the next Stage?

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2022: Committee Stage (28 Jun 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Is that agreed? Agreed.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Consolidation in Horticultural Grower Numbers: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I am delighted to be here to support the guests. My first job was teaching horticulture. I make a constant argument that when we talk about environmental issues, we are defeating the purpose when we ban the production of peat here and bring it in from eastern Europe instead. Also, we need to consider all the things we could produce in this country instead of importing them from all over...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I welcome all the witnesses here. We are all disappointed, but at least we live in a country where people are asked to come in. Seven people have come in and they have faced us. We have a job to do and they understand that. I can see right around this room, whether it is from this side or that side, that there are very disappointed faces. A lot of the public had great faith in RTÉ....

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Eugene Murphy: The Minister was not told directly that Ms Ní Raghallaigh had asked Dee Forbes to step down.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I wish to correct something that was said earlier, but I am not making a big issue of it. It was said that the agent, NKM, has four or five RTÉ staff, but if we look at the website, I estimate that there are 20 people from RTÉ on the books there. I think Ms Ní Raghallaigh should know that. It is a big number of people. I am not making a big issue of it. I will move on....
