- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Current Housing Demand: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Jun 2014)
Denis Landy: As a final interjection, would Mr. Layde accept that, from the point of view of the housing applicant, this is not favourable compared to the opportunity they would get to become a local authority tenant, whereby they would have security of tenure, as I have already outlined? Would he accept that is a fact?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Current Housing Demand: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Jun 2014)
Denis Landy: Mr. Layde is going to run the clock down without answering the question.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Current Housing Demand: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Jun 2014)
Denis Landy: I welcome the officials. I also welcome all of the initiatives brought forward by the Government to deal with the housing problem. However, I would like to put a number of questions. Mr. Layde has said the rent limit review will feed into the budgetary process. Will an adjustment to the limits be ready for introduction in the budget in October? I refer to the HAP and the shift in social...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (4 Jun 2014)
Denis Landy: I have four minutes as well, have I?
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (4 Jun 2014)
Denis Landy: I wish to offer my concern and support to the workers in Bausch & Lomb in Waterford city who are facing a difficult time at the moment in the absence of Senator Cullinane, who raised the issue earlier. In his absence last Thursday, the Leader of the House and myself raised the issue with the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy Bruton. We had a detailed discussion...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (4 Jun 2014)
Denis Landy: Can we turn him off?
- Seanad: Industrial Development (Forfás Dissolution) Bill 2013: Second Stage (29 May 2014)
Denis Landy: I welcome the Minister to the House. We have all been on the hustings for the past three weeks. The Minister's name came up in my town because in the mid-1990s he announced and brought to the town the last major industry in Carrick-on-Suir, SRAM bicycle components. We accorded the Minister a civic reception at the time and it was a very good day. We have not had good days since then. I...
- Seanad: Seanad Electoral (Panel Members) (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (14 May 2014)
Denis Landy: That is not a matter for this debate.
- Seanad: Seanad Electoral (Panel Members) (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (14 May 2014)
Denis Landy: They have been giving out about Fianna Fáil on the doorsteps.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2014)
Denis Landy: I support what Senator Ó Clochartaigh said in respect of asylum seekers and the ban on their being canvassed by the political parties. In many parts of the country local election candidates of all persuasions have organised meetings outside direct provision centres and these have proven to be very successful. The ban is unacceptable, however. In the previous local elections in 2009,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)
Denis Landy: I welcome the statement by the independent expert panel that was set up to oversee the integrity of the process to be undertaken by EirGrid on the Grid Link and Grid West projects. Yesterday, the independent panel, which has met on four occasions, issued a statement and also issued the terms of reference under which it will examine the integrity of the work that EirGrid has done to date,...
- Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2014: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: I thank the Minister of State for taking this issue and I greatly appreciate the Opposition's response to this legislation, both in the Lower and Upper Houses. As the Minister of State indicated in the opening statement, this is something which should have been done years ago. We can only do this when in government but it is important that the Opposition has supported the Bill. I support...
- Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2014: Second Stage (16 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: I welcome the Minister. Where a few words suffice, I will not use too many. This Bill is welcomed by both sides of the House. I read the transcripts of the speeches made in the Lower House. Although one colleague of mine expressed some reservations, it was fair comment. The Bill seeks to update dated legislation. I did not know until I read the legislation that a bankrupt person could...
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: I also welcome the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Oisín Quinn, to the Chamber. I wish to put on record how much I enjoyed my most recent visit to the Mansion House, when the Lord Mayor launched a book written by our colleague, Senator Whelan, entitled The Buddha of Ballyhuppahaun. A most enjoyable evening was had with the Lord Mayor on that occasion. I welcome the publication last Monday of the...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Current Housing Demand: Discussion (15 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: I was hoping there would be recognition of the fact that there are no services in rural areas, therefore people drift to the cities where there are services, albeit in sheltered accommodation or sleeping bags. I have been made aware of this from speaking to people across the country.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Current Housing Demand: Discussion (15 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: I wish to conclude this session. I thank the witnesses who appeared before the committee for their contributions on this important topic. Obviously, their views will be of assistance in the compilation of our report to the Minister.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Current Housing Demand: Discussion (15 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: For someone stuck for words, Mr. Mike Allen did very well.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Current Housing Demand: Discussion (15 Apr 2014)
Denis Landy: I thank the witnesses for attending. With regard to the homeless figures for last night, is there any evidence on the number of people coming out of the rural Ireland into the city? I make it my business to stop and talk to the homeless people around this building every day. Most of them are from rural Ireland. I am curious as to whether the groups have any information on that. With...
