- Topical Issue Debate: Homeless Accommodation Provision (2 Dec 2014)
Mick Wallace: The death of Jonathan Corrie is shocking but not surprising. I thought Rory Hearne of Maynooth University put it well when he said recently:When our financial system was in peril there was no obstacle too large for our political establishment and the state to overcome. Now we face an equivalent crisis in terms of the fundamental housing needs and rights of hundreds of thousands of our...

- Garda Síochána (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) (27 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: With respect to the Minister of State, Deputy English, I am disappointed the Minister for Justice and Equality is not in the House for this debate.
- Garda Síochána (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) (27 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: Although the Bill signals a move in the right direction, it is, once examined, ultimately disappointing. It is good window dressing and makes all the right noises but political and ministerial control of the Garda Síochána remains rigidly in place. The two amendments that carry most significance in terms of strengthening the powers of GSOC have been imposed on the Government by...

Mick Wallace: 35. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills the details on planned changes to staffing schedules in small primary schools, which will increase the appointment-retention figure for a second teacher to 20 students; the measures being taken to ensure that small schools such as a school (details supplied) in County Wexford, that provide a key service to the community, will not be forced to...
- Human Rights Budgeting: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (26 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: We all have our own ways of presenting things. I thank Deputy Maureen O'Sullivan for tabling the motion and creating a stimulating debate on the issue. We can massage figures and play with words, and when it is done in the Chamber here it is called spin. Everyone is capable of it in their own way. When the Government came into power, its Members thought they could never spin it like the...
- Finance Bill 2014: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (26 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: I am looking for clarification from the Minister on amendment No. 49. If it cannot be proved that a house has a certain level of pyrite - that it is at level one rather than level two - is this the reason the Minister does not wish it to get through the net and to avail of the exemption from the local property tax? Is my understanding correct? If this is the argument, I would counter-argue...
- Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: The Minister knows I could not go that day.
- Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: I was also promised we would be given an input into how the police authority would be structured.
- Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: The Taoiseach speaks about insults, but with regard to the independent review mechanism, it is an insult to all of the people who have filed complaints and have come to us with complaints, some of which are not filed, that someone from the existing hierarchy would be appointed.
- Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: What has been going on since Shatter left? I knew I would miss Shatter-----
- Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: -----but I did not think I would miss him this much. How much legislation have we seen since Shatter went?
- Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: Sorry, Deputy Shatter. We were told we would have the terms of reference for the commission of investigation, as recommended by the Guerin report, within six weeks of the report, but that was seven months ago. We were told that by the end of the summer we would have the results of the independent review mechanism on what sort of process would take place. How many months ago was that?
- Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)
Mick Wallace: It is crazy. Professor Dermot Walsh, probably the leading individual on policing in Ireland, has said all along that if we want to reform policing in Ireland we must go outside the State and clean the slate. The existing hierarchy are all from the one crew. The Government will not get reform-----
