Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (14 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: I support my colleague, Senator Coffey. His sentiments are being expressed by Senator Dearey in a most unfavourable manner. It is not what Senator Coffey meant at all. They are not being expressed properly. My party made this suggestion regarding six months or 12 months in the House and we were laughed out of court. We were opposed by most Members on the Government side, except some...

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (14 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: Will the Minister check if a Minister of State is available?

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (14 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: I compliment the people involved in the greyhound industry and the chief executive officer and others involved because they represented what was going on and the concerns of the industry. They are quite capable and they should be able to give an interpretation of what their members are saying and of the danger the legislation poses to the industry without the amendments tabled by the Minister.

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (14 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: I welcome the Minister. As the first person to raise the puppy farm issue in this House more than six years ago, I welcome legislation that may eradicate the problems we saw on our television screens and on many occasions witnessed. As I stated on the last occasion when Report Stage of the Bill came before this House, I regret the Minister was not in a position to bring these amendments...

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: Last week I asked the Leader about proposed legislation relating to on-line betting. It is imperative that the companies involved are brought into the tax net as a matter of urgency. The Taoiseach gave an indication that such legislation would be introduced before the summer, but we have not seen it. I do not know whether the Leader has found out what the position is since last week, but I...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (14 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: Was he not right?

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (14 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: I could see Joe Doyle chuckling when he was credited with slowing down the progress of the Green Party. I say that in jest. Joe was a real Dubliner, a gentleman and a friend. He was elected to Dublin City Council in 1979, the same year I was elected to Waterford City Council. The highlight of his career was being the first citizen of the city he loved so well, our capital city. Joe was a...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: She wants a debate on Ringo Starr.

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy. (13 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: I join my colleagues in expressing sympathy to the family of the late Nuala Fennell who served in this House from 1987 to 1989. She certainly loved her years in the Seanad, although she was glad to win back her Dáil seat in 1989 in which she served until 1992. As many others have stated, she was part of the irreversible movement at the time in highlighting the status of women in Ireland...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: I join the Leader in expressing our sincere sympathy and condolences to the eight families of those who were killed tragically in Donegal. Road safety is something on which we should all keep our minds and on which we should reflect to see whether we can do anything in this or the other House on road safety. The HSE's ongoing failure to respond to HIQA's grave concerns in respect of the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: The unholy trinity.

Seanad: Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (7 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: Amendments Nos. 7 to 9, inclusive, are related and will be discussed together.

Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (6 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: As one of the few who spoke on the Bill on Second Stage last week, I felt obliged to come back into the House this evening to speak in support of the two amendments before the House. We spoke last week about the haven of peace, serenity and tranquility within the walls of St. Luke's Hospital. We have all had family members who suffered from cancer, many of whom attended St. Luke's...

Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (6 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: -----if the Minister of State had the will to do so. At least, that would provide certainty for the board, the Friends of St. Luke's and patients. It would also provide certainty that the hospital would be used for cancer treatment services for public patients for many years to come. What people who suffer from cancer want is dignity and respect; that is the least they should be able to...

Seanad: Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (6 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: I can believe it.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: It seems there is confusion on the Order of Business.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: For a start, that is a source of confusion.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: The Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010 is to be taken at 4.30 p.m and will conclude well before 7.30 p.m., when we will be asked to deal with the other matter. Will we begin dealing with the Central Bank Reform Bill at 7.30 p.m.?

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2010)

Maurice Cummins: Therefore, it is possible we will have a break of about two hours between the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill and the Central Bank Reform Bill. What is the reason for the delay?
