Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Sinn Féin is opposed to sections 6 and 7. The right to a pension is a long-standing Irish republican principle. The 1919 democratic programme promised to provide for the care of the nation's aged and infirm "who shall not be regarded as a burden but rather entitled to the nation's gratitude and consideration". All those who subscribe to this principle must defend and extend, rather than...

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: It is better than putting it into the banks.

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: It is the truth.

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: We should try.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Rinne mo chomhghleacaí, an Seanadóir Ó Maonaigh, pointe maidir le fracking agus acmhainní nádúrtha. Tá sé spéisiúil gurb é an Rialtas deireanach a thug ceadúnas go leanfaí ar aghaidh leis an fracking atá ar siúl i Loch Aillionn. Iarraim ar Cheannaire an Tí go mbeadh díospoíreacht i bhfad níos leithne againn maidir leis na hacmhainní nádúrtha sa tír seo. Ba cheart dó...

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: -----to determine where the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources stands on the issue, whether we will use our natural resources for the good of the country or whether we will impose regimes more favourable to taxpayers than has been the case. Ba mhaith liom go n-iarrfaí ar an Aire teacht isteach agus déileáil leis na ceisteannna sin. Ba mhaith liom freisin tacú leis...

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I move amendment No. 3: In page 6, before section 4, to insert the following new section: "4.—The provisions of section 3 shall apply to new jobs only.". I want to outline the thinking behind the amendment from the Sinn Féin perspective. The Bill is intended to halve the employers' rate of PRSI on jobs that pay up to €356 per week. This move is unlikely to create many new jobs. Instead...

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I thank the Minister for her comprehensive reply. Even if there is very little evidence that this is happening, there is evidence of it. That is the reason we proposed the amendment to protect those few people concerned, especially in the current difficult economic scenario. It would act as a deterrent to employers who are not fully scrupulous and who might try to exploit people in various...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Ach oiread le Seanadóirí eile, ba mhaith liom tréaslú le Colum McCann as an duais iontach a ghnóthaigh sé. Is maith an onóir é agus go n-éireoidh leis. Sílim go bhfuil sé tráthúil mar go raibh mé chun ceist a ardú maidir leis an ábhar seo, mar in aimsir géarchéime, is minic go ndéantar dearmad ar chúrsaí ealaíona. Ó bheith ag caint le daoine a bhíonn ag plé le...

Seanad: Road Network (16 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit, gabhaim comhghairdeas leis as a cheapachán agus go n-éirí an t-ádh leis ina phost nua. Táim ag ardú ceiste a bhaineann le mótarbhealaí agus na tolls atá dháíoc orthu. Deir ráitis a tháinig amach seachtain nó dhóó shin ón AA nach bhfuil daoine ag úsáid na mótarbhealaí mar gheall ar na tolls atá ann. Táthar anois ag caint ar dhá...

Seanad: Road Network (16 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I welcome the fact about future roads not having a toll. Will the Minister of State convey our concerns to the Minister? The AA statement basically states that tolls are driving people back onto old roads. That is clogging up towns. People are not using the motorways, which is a serious concern. We need to get people back onto motorways. The best way to do that is to release the tolls.

Seanad: Schools Refurbishment (14 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. Mar chomhleacaí ó Ghaillimh, ba mhaith liom gach ádh a ghuí air in a ról agus a phost nua. Go n-éirí an t-ádh leis sa jab sin. D'ardaigh mé an cheist seo ar son coiste tuismitheoirí scoil náisiúnta Thír an Fhia. Rinne an scoil seo iarratas ar thacaíocht le haghaidh athrú a dhéanamh ar fhuinneoga agus doirse sa scoil, mar tá an scoil i...

Seanad: Schools Refurbishment (14 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Is the Minister of State, Deputy Cannon, stating it was more important to prioritise security for the Queen of England and President Obama than to spend on the children in our schools? Sufficient capital has not been made available.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Ba mhaith liom go n-iarrfaí ar an Aire Iompair teacht isteach agus soiléiriú a thabhairt don Teach maidir le cúrsaí mótarbhealaí agus cúrsaí infrastruchtúra agus na forbairtí atá á dhéanamh ansin, i bhfianaise an scéal atá tagtha amach go bhfuilimid ag íoc €500,000 in aghaidh na míosa le comhlucht Spáinneach mar nach bhfuil a dóthain carannaí ag úsáid na...

Seanad: Schools Amalgamation (9 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Céad fáilte roimh an Aire. Tá mé cinnte go bhfuil sé thar a bheith gnóthach na laethanta seo agus seans go raibh a chluasa te níos luaithe inniu, mar bhíomar ag caint faoi sa díospóireacht a bhí againn maidir le cúrsaí Gaeilge. I am sure the Minister had warm ears earlier when he was in the House during the debate on the Irish language strategy and the important role he has to...

Seanad: Schools Amalgamation (9 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I would like to raise the need for the Minister to clarify the Government's intention on the future of two-teacher schools and their importance for maintaining a vibrant rural community. There are 570 two-teacher schools, which comprises one in six of the State's primary schools. The McCarthy report proposed to merge schools with fewer than 100 pupils but, as we have witnessed, while many...

Seanad: Schools Amalgamation (9 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I thank the Minister.

Seanad: Schools Amalgamation (9 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I thank the Minister for his comprehensive answer. I agree with him completely. We would welcome that engagement. It is very important that we would engage. The Department in the past has taken a very different approach and given directives on how things would be. I seek further clarification on the wider dimension such as the language ethos of a school, for example, where there might be...

Seanad: Progress on the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language: Statements (9 Jun 2011)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Is breá an rud fáilte a chur roimh duine Gaeltachta eile le díospóireacht chomh tábhachtach leis seo. Tá mé fíor-bhuíoch de Cheannaire an Tí gur thoiligh sé go mbeadh an díospóireacht seo ann mar gheall ar iarratas ó Shinn Féin mar sílimid go bhfuil an t-ábhar seo fíor-thábhachtach. Tá beagán díoma orm a laghad Seanadóirí atá i láthair le haghaidh na...
