Seanad: An Bille um an Dara Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Deireadh a Chur le Seanad Éireann) 2013: An Dara Céim (Atógáil) - Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (3 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: Rather than ask the vast majority of Irish people a question that denies them the possibility of ever considering reform, we should amend this proposal. I recall the words of George Washington, who is said to have told Thomas Jefferson that the framers of the American Senate designed it to cool legislation, just as a saucer cools hot tea. Madison talked about the Senate as a necessary fence...

Rónán Mullen: They will not deprive the people of their referendum.

Rónán Mullen: We should insist on an amended referendum proposal that allows people to vote for a reformed Seanad which would include franchise for everybody in electing the Seanad, as well as a more clearly defined function for this House.

Rónán Mullen: I hope the Cathaoirleach will not be too hard on me as this is an important debate. While I welcome the Minister of State to the House there have been many occasions lately when I have had major concerns about the direction this Government has taken. While this may not be the most important issue before these Houses in these days, it is an extremely important issue. The fact that we are in...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: Ten minutes would not be ample on Second Stage.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: On the issue raised by Senator Martin Conway, the less said about the comments made in that particular German newspaper the better. References to violence, even in jest, are unhelpful. People say certain things will never happen, but then they do. I support the comments made by my colleague, Senator David Norris, on the decision of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: I am almost finished. There are many more who share their views. It is about time we had a debate on the capacity to vote in accordance with one's conscience, particularly on life and death issues. I certainly would not be able to live with my conscience if I voted for such legislation. Everybody should have maximum freedom on issues such as this.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: Senator O'Sullivan should stop slurring the majority with the actions of a few loons.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: Senator O'Sullivan is blaming people who are not to blame. This is distracting from the issue.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: To follow what others have said on the Anglo Irish Bank tapes, I was astounded to hear the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Deputy Howlin, suggest on Sunday that he would be willing to contemplate re-running the referendum on Oireachtas committees of inquiry. The people gave their clear answer on that matter and deemed that politicians were not the appropriate persons to carry out...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: It would be a shame if that were not our focus on this dark day in politics. It is an indictment.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: I acknowledge Leitrim County Council also. It is very notable that, nationally, many local representatives from the Government parties have expressed their concern on this issue. It is the party leaderships of Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin, the Labour Party and Fine Gael who have driven an agenda-----

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: -----to activate a controversial interpretation of our constitutional protection for the unborn. It is no exaggeration to say that the Irish people have never mandated that controversial decision, however people might pretend otherwise.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Jul 2013)

Rónán Mullen: Does the Leader agree with me on what journalist Stephen Collins raised today? Mr. Collins wrote "Whether it is the restrictive piece of legislation the Taoiseach and his Ministers insist, or whether it will allow for a more liberal abortion regime, only time will tell". Does the Leader agree that it is too serious a question to leave to time and that we should not be going down this road...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2013)

Rónán Mullen: He merely does not engage. He appears to be a managed Taoiseach who comes out with mantraic lines-----

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2013)

Rónán Mullen: -----which do not reassure the public that he is across the detail of what he is proposing.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2013)

Rónán Mullen: On issues as serious as these, the Taoiseach needs to show for the ball a little more. In conclusion-----

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2013)

Rónán Mullen: -----as we face into this debate on the abolition of the Seanad, I remind the Government Senators in particular of what Mr. Ciaran Fitzgerald said many years ago-----

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2013)

Rónán Mullen: -----when he asked his colleagues on the Irish rugby team where their pride was.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2013)

Rónán Mullen: The Government Senators need to find their pride in the coming days and weeks.
