Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Did Ms Graham say it would take a number of years?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Ms Graham is also saying that there is no short-term solution.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I understand, but people will decide that, for a one-off journey or a journey once or twice per week, it might be worth their while getting in the car, and we will once again have failed to do what we wanted to do.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I accept that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Might I request a submission from the NTA detailing why this cannot be done, where the difficulties lie and what possibilities it is looking into? Perhaps our committee could perform due diligence on this matter. I assume that the NTA has looked for fixes internationally. This issue needs to be moved on, given how constant it is. We cannot keep asking the same questions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: What is the fastest way one could be introduced?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Years.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We need to find a short-term solution before then. This committee will have to do something in that regard.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Ms Anne Graham from the NTA was before the committee earlier. She spoke about the account-based ticketing system. She said that tendering has begun but that the project will take a couple of years. I assume it will be closer to 2024 as opposed to early in 2023. I ask because we had hoped that there would be short-term fix about the TaxSaver ticketing system that would suit someone...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: That is what I was going to say. A willingness could get around some of these issues.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are only talking testing phase.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: There is no time line on it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Region: Discussion (4 May 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: No, I was talking about the use of AI and data analytics in relation to improvements that could be made, rather than replacing-----

Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2022: Second Stage (27 Apr 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I seem to be the mudguard today. I seem to be in here just for that. Everyone, and particularly the Minister, will be glad I did not have the full ten minutes. In fairness, I will not reiterate everything Deputy Kenny has said, although I may reiterate one or two of his points. We all welcome this legislation as necessary, particularly as the reality of the world is that people think...

Carbon Tax: Motion [Private Members] (27 Apr 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: It has not in any way, shape or form. It should not take five minutes to point out the fact that everybody accepts what needs to happen in opposition to climate change. We can all see the failures involved. If carbon tax is intended as a means of changing behaviour, it has not succeeded. That narrative has stopped. We are being told about how much is being ring-fenced from the carbon...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: Engagement with Ambassadors of Moldova and Romania (27 Apr 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Yes, the future is secure in my hands. I thank the two ambassadors for coming before us and for their previous contributions. We can see from the report that a significant amount of due diligence was done by the group that travelled. It was a very useful piece of work and this is a follow-up on it. In regard to where the conversation started, it started during the pandemic with regard to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: Engagement with Ambassadors of Moldova and Romania (27 Apr 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I do not think people would think that was necessarily a great travesty. It might be a hard political sell.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: Engagement with Ambassadors of Moldova and Romania (27 Apr 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I thank the ambassadors for those answers. What Ambassador Miculet is talking about are particularly detailed asks. Would it be possible for the committee to get a look at them? I am referring to the asks from the support platform. Could we play our part in that respect? Maybe it is not possible.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: Engagement with Ambassadors of Moldova and Romania (27 Apr 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: The ambassador put it very well. It is a matter of making sure that Moldova survives. For the want of a better term we have had a perfect storm. As regards Russia we talked about energy resilience but this is an energy crisis meeting a geopolitical crisis and climate change. I am sorry to use the term South Ossetia in respect of Georgia. My point is that we wonder why Russia cares about...
