Leaders' Questions (Resumed) (12 Jul 2016)

Mick Barry: The Government Whip went on radio on Saturday and sang a song. It was a fitting way to round off what had been a most musical week in Dáil Éireann. Did not half of the Cabinet spend the week accusing the poor Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Deputy Shane Ross, of not showing sufficient "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" for the views of the Attorney General? The stage trapdoor opened and...

Leaders' Questions (Resumed) (12 Jul 2016)

Mick Barry: As for the Taoiseach, like Sinatra, he did it his way and now the end is near and, if Deputy Brendan Griffin has his way, he soon will face the final curtain. My question to the Tánaiste today concerns water charges. I start with a confession-----

Leaders' Questions (Resumed) (12 Jul 2016)

Mick Barry: Now, now.

Leaders' Questions (Resumed) (12 Jul 2016)

Mick Barry: I have to confess that, as one of the founder members of the national boycott campaign, I never expected to see a 73% non-payment rate. The anti-poll tax campaign which, by the way, ended the political career of the Iron Lady, Maggie Thatcher, never achieved a 73% non-payment rate or anything like it. If one was to find a fitting historical comparison, one might need to flick through the...

Mick Barry: 294. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government if he can reimburse Co-operative Housing Ireland the cost of heating Merville Court, Fairview, Dublin 3, given that prior to it being taken over by the co-operative, the tenants were part of the rental accommodation scheme, and the cost of the heating was met by Dublin City Council, and recoupable from his Department...

Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest: Statements (8 Jul 2016)

Mick Barry: We are here.

Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest: Statements (8 Jul 2016)

Mick Barry: I would like to begin by making a point about emergency legislation. After the 1998 Omagh bombing, which left 31 people dead and 220 people injured, the then Government introduced emergency amending legislation in the form of the Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act 1998. Every year since then, the Dáil comes back to debate the provisions of that Act and to vote on whether to...

Other Questions: Arts Funding (7 Jul 2016)

Mick Barry: 9. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht her plans to increase the existing funding to the arts, given that the European average for arts funding is 0.6 per cent of Gross Domestic Product; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19895/16]

Other Questions: Arts Funding (7 Jul 2016)

Mick Barry: Many statistics have been produced in this session so far. Let us focus on the most important statistic, namely, the average European spend on arts funding of 0.6% of gross domestic product, GDP. The equivalent Irish figure is 0.1%. That is one sixth of the European average. What steps does the Minister intend to take to bridge this shameful gap?

Other Questions: Arts Funding (7 Jul 2016)

Mick Barry: The Minister does not accept the figures that I have quoted so I ask her to produce her own figures. What are the Minister's figures? Does she calculate that our 0.1% of GDP might be greater than the European average? Does she calculate that our shameful figure of 0.1% might be equal to or the same as the European average, or does she calculate that it is very close? If it is not equal,...

Other Questions: Arts Funding (7 Jul 2016)

Mick Barry: I take it from the Minister's reply that she is unable to produce the figure that I have asked for. I will move on and look at the issue of words rather than figures. I quote the Minister the following words: "There is anger, disquiet and disbelief about the effective dilution of the arts as a Cabinet portfolio." That is taken from a motion which was unanimously passed in this House just a...
