Seanad: Order of Business (28 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: I am trying to be helpful.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: I second the proposal by Senator Denis O'Donovan for an amendment to the Order of Business concerning the Minister, Deputy Shatter. I share with other Senators our best wishes to the seven nominated candidates. Though I could not assist our colleague, Senator Norris, I wish him well, as I wish Ms Dana Rosemary Scallon well. I am reminded very much of the Seanad campaign, given all the...

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: I just want to share the point.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: I ask the Acting Leader if she would arrange an ongoing debate on the creation of jobs, which is the priority of this Government, as it was of the previous Government. To this end, I request that we would have regular short debates in which we would meet Ministers from different Departments to put forward suggestions or ideas from the very experienced Members of this House. I will start the...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: I second the proposal by Senator Healy Eames in regard to University College Hospital Galway. The hospital is greatly overcrowded and the closure of the accident and emergency department at Roscommon County Hospital has added to the numbers attending. The situation is very serious, to the extent that the HSE has requested that patients not attend UCHG. There was one case last week where a...

Terry Leyden: Wait a moment-----

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: Yes. I commend the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Deputy Gilmore, on his statement in New York in regard to this issue. I am now convinced he is more of a lion than a lamb in the Cabinet. Senator Ivana Bacik stated last week that the Government would follow this policy, which has been confirmed. I thank the Senator for that.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: In light of the statement by the Minister, it would be appropriate for the House to have an all-party, agreed motion, by combining both motions in a very positive way. This is very important to the people of Palestine.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: I believe the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Deputy Gilmore, is more of a lion than a lamb in the Cabinet. That is a fact.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: My question to the Leader is very clear. I request that he and the leaders of the other groups draw up a combined motion. That would be an extremely useful exercise. If one criticises the actions of Israel-----

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: -----one is continually accused of being anti-Semitic. That is grossly unfair. I am not anti-Semitic. The Leader inadvertently implied that last week when he said-----

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: I only received one e-mail from someone who was not happy with regard to what I said. One Labour Party councillor in south Dublin also made some kind of statement on the matter. I wish to make the point that I am not anti-Israel. I am pro-Palestine and pro-Israel. I support the notion that both countries should have self-determination and that their people should live side by side in...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: Senator Keane has lovely, soft hands.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: Excellent.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: The Senator should be working with Met Éireann.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: Will the Leader accept the non-Government motion? The massive Jewish vote in the United States of America influences government policy and Obama is now a tool of the Israeli State. It is not a question of "Yes, we can", but "No, we will not".

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Sep 2011)

Terry Leyden: At the beginning of the end of his presidency, I hope the 40 million Irish Americans in the US will remember his statement last night at the United Nations.
