- Other Questions: Defence Forces Properties (15 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: I will not delay the House. My question will give the Minister of State the opportunity to set on the record the Government's commitment to Gormanston Camp, allow the public to know of that commitment and recognise the camp's importance to the Defence Forces and the local area.
- Other Questions: Defence Forces Properties (15 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: I thank the Minister of State. It is worth reminding the House of the functions and importance of Gormanston Camp and getting that commitment from the Government. From time to time, one hears questions on the matter, so it is important to have that commitment on the record of the House. I am grateful to the Minister of State for that.
- North-South Interconnector: Motion [Private Members] (14 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: Yes, I will wrap up the debate. I thank my party colleagues for agreeing to support the motion. I also thank colleagues from other parties who supported the motion. When this debate concludes the will of the Dáil will become exceedingly clear. Should the motion be passed, the Government will have no option but to implement its terms and accept what the representatives of the people...
- North-South Interconnector: Motion [Private Members] (14 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: It was not available in 2007. The Minister of State was a great advocate for undergrounding the pylons when he was in opposition.
- North-South Interconnector: Motion [Private Members] (14 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: I have attended virtually every meeting, both in government and opposition, and took the flak when my party was in government and sometimes when we were in opposition. I have always worked to achieve the will of the people on this issue, which is the sensible solution. Let us consider the time that has been wasted on this project, which was conceived as a means of having a secure...

- Other Questions: North-South Interconnector (7 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: First, to say this is not related to Brexit or the EU is totally misleading and disingenuous. As the Minister knows, this is a project of common interest, as designated by the European Commission, so it clearly has strong European ties and links, regardless of the legislation. Second, the Minister and EirGrid, as the semi-State body, must have regard to the fact it is now clear that a...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Equal Status (Admission to Schools) Bill 2016: Discussion (7 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: I must leave to go to the Dáil for a very short period - probably during some of the opening statements.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Equal Status (Admission to Schools) Bill 2016: Discussion (7 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: I apologise that I had to leave during the meeting and that I missed some of the contributions. Some, including Dr. Fennelly in his submission, have raised the fact that the Minister is having his own consultations and we are having our discussions separately. People have raised this with me privately too. The answer to that is that the Minister has no control over this committee. We are...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Equal Status (Admission to Schools) Bill 2016: Discussion (7 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: How it will affect each particular group of the joint management body, the Catholic primary schools, the Islamic schools, the Church of Ireland schools, na Gaelscoileanna and the community schools? I want to tease that out. I do not really have any other questions.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Equal Status (Admission to Schools) Bill 2016: Discussion (7 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: This is not about me telling Ms Rainsberry my views. I am just trying to get her views on the difficulties before we make our decisions. If we were to make a law specifying that a school could only prioritise Protestant children or co-religionists from within a catchment area and that it could not bring in Protestant children from outside that area, but if the catchment area were to be...

Thomas Byrne: That is what is envisaged.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Equal Status (Admission to Schools) Bill 2016: Discussion (7 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: It is certainly not what I envisage for catchment areas, which should be as large as necessary particularly for a minority faith school.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Equal Status (Admission to Schools) Bill 2016: Discussion (7 Feb 2017)
Thomas Byrne: I know Dr. Fennelly's organisation represents not just Church of Ireland schools, but also Presbyterian schools, etc. Does it give any preference Presbyterian children?
