Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (20 Apr 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I endorse the Chair's comments. When I see the secretariat there and other committees, I think of the work they put in behind the scenes. They are so committed to their work. They are lovely people to work with, and very helpful. All I can say is, I wish Susan the best of luck as she moves forward. Yes, they are big shoes for that man to fill.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Apr 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I support the Order of Business as outlined by the Deputy Leader. The big topic is our finances. We see there may be a surplus of €12 billion. It is worth noting that if we were to take away the corporation tax, things would not be as bright. As long as it lasts and as long as we are aware it might not always be there in such great strength, we have to be cautious. That is why I...

Seanad: Sheep Sector: Statements (19 Apr 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I welcome all the representatives of the sheep farming community throughout the country. I think I see one man I know is from the trade. I was wrestling with a bad knee injury and he offered me his seat but I did not take it up. I heard him say "96 ewes and eight hoggets". Was that right? Little did I think I would meet him here today because I did not know he was coming here today, but...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I agree with Senator Kyne in the relation to the sheep farmers. He made a very fair case about the concerns they have now. There is an issue. I acknowledge that the Minister has spoken to us about this issue. I spoke to him last week and he is going to bring a package forward. It would be a good idea if he came before the House to have a discussion about this. He knows the sector very...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: He is listening.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Senator Doherty laid the foundations.

Seanad: Health (Amendment) Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages (30 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Now.

Seanad: Health (Amendment) Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages (30 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Now.

Seanad: Health (Amendment) Bill 2023: Committee and Remaining Stages (30 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: On behalf of my colleagues, I commend the Minister on the way he has handled this and made something really happen. This was not just an announcement. People said to me when it was initially announced that it would not happen. It has happened. I have met people in my clinics who say they cannot afford to go into hospital for three or four days, they do not have a medical card and so on...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (30 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: This is an important issue. I apologise that I was caught up in another briefing. I have been talking to people about this issue since we spoke about it at a previous meeting. The number of people who have had issues with sepsis is extraordinary. The suggestion is a good one and I support and welcome it.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I support Senator Kyne on the matter of school meals. I raised a Commencement matter before the House, and as I think other Senators did, and the results of this need to be dealt with as quickly as possible. As Senator Kyne has rightly said, people who provide the service are opting out. I was talking to some people providing that service. It is incredible. The reality is that they are...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Go raibh maith agat, a Chathaoirligh. I must say you are looking well after your trip. I hope you enjoyed the weekend. I am one who very much believes that we get great mileage out of St. Patrick's Day across the world. I know some people have a different view, but we really get huge publicity across the world, and I think our Ministers and various leaders, including the Cathaoirleach,...

Seanad: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Report and Final Stages (22 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Before we commence, I remind Members that a Senator may speak only once on Report Stage, except the proposer of an amendment who may reply to the discussion on the amendment. On Report Stage each non-Government amendment must be seconded. The Minister of State has informed me that he may be called for votes in the Dáil. In that case we will need to suspend. Amendment No. 1 is in the...

Seanad: Historic and Archaeological Heritage Bill 2023: Report and Final Stages (22 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: The Senator has made his case very strongly. I call the Minister of State to respond.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of Sheep Sector: Discussion (8 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Tá fáilte roimh go léir an tráthnóna seo. A lot of what I want to ask has been asked so I am not going to repeat the questions and Senator Paul Daly's questions clarified quite a lot. I have always been supportive of farmers, as the witnesses will know, and I have been very supportive of farmers in Roscommon, and I spoke to quite a few farmers at the day out there....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of Sheep Sector: Discussion (8 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: That should be supported and like others, including the IFA, I want to support it. Although I do not want the witnesses to form an opinion that I am against it, I have a question as to the difficulty of selling the lamb, which Senator Daly asked about. Can this be marketed in such a way that it can be sold?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of Sheep Sector: Discussion (8 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: Thank you for answering that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of Sheep Sector: Discussion (8 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I have one question for Mr. Burke or Mr. Comiskey. We see that the spring lamb period is the time that farmers expect a bit of extra money. Do the witnesses see that being affected this year by the crisis? If that was to happen, it would be quite serious.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of Sheep Sector: Discussion (8 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I thank all the witnesses very much. I wish the Crosse brothers the best of luck with their project.

Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on Lil Reds Legacy Sepsis Awareness Campaign: Mr. Joseph Hughes and Irish Sepsis Foundation (2 Mar 2023)

Eugene Murphy: I was going to suggest it since Deputy McAuliffe knows the witnesses.
