Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Supplementary)
(17 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: On that, we have had hearings on AI and you would nearly terrify yourself. I understand AI moves very fast, etc. Is there work under way in the Department to skill people up? This is not an area I suspect will be a flash in the pan. I do not think this is a passing fad. I suspect this is something for the future.

Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Supplementary)
(17 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: How does that work then in terms of that 39% increase in spending? Is that going to EI or is that expertise coming from somewhere else?

Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Supplementary)
(17 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: I do not want to be peppering the Minister of State with questions here. Could we get a breakdown of where that spend is? It would probably be helpful in written form, if that was okay.

Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Supplementary)
(17 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: There is a €258,000 PIRB increased pension liability. It used to be PIAB. I always forget what the R is for. Does that relate to a number of pensions or just one pension? What is the situation there?

Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Supplementary)
(17 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: That is just what it is. It is just that adjustment.

Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Supplementary)
(17 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: My final question relates to the disruptive technologies and innovation fund. I understand from the Minister of State's contribution that there are a number of reasons why almost a quarter of that money was not used. Is there a concern there? I can see the reasons why but given that it is a fund that should be oversubscribed, is there any concern? Has the Department undertaken any...

Select Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 32 - Enterprise, Trade and Employment (Supplementary)
(17 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: That is all my questions. I thank the Minister of State.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (17 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: After a campaign by parents, there are now four primary-level ASD classes in my town of Skerries, in the Educate Together National School, with two more due on stream. However, there are no places for these kids in secondary schools. As sure as night follows day, a child who starts in primary school will hopefully progress into secondary school. Temporary accommodation was provided for...

VAT Rate for Hospitality Sector: Motion [Private Members] (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: There is no doubt that our small companies are struggling. Small and medium-sized enterprises are, as everyone has said, and as I know the Minister of State will acknowledge, the backbone of our economy. I thank Teachtaí Dála for engaging with the food and catering sector, listening to its concerns and bringing forward this constructive motion. This issue resonates far beyond...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: I welcome that two apprentices have been taken on. Mr. O'Connor should not get me wrong but scope surely exists for more. There is a reference in the submission a possible degree course in SETU, the tourism opportunities, etc. It is a case of moving quickly at this stage rather than anything else to seize that opportunity before it is gone.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: We have outlined that there is an opportunity here and Ms Palmer outlined some of the good work that is being done in the social enterprise space. It is not often that we discuss at this committee a business idea that is also a social enterprise idea that will work well and could be driven by the Department. Is Ms Palmer confident that there is an appetite in her sector for people to engage...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: Can I put the same question to DCCI?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: I am sorry to cut across Mr. Hynes but, in fairness, that is we are hearing. What is coming across is that the opportunity is there but it will not be there forever. It is a matter of striking while the iron is hot. I will come in at the end as to what it is the Department can do.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: I thank Ms Blanchfield.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: Of course.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: That is key for us to understand. The time is tight and the opportunity is unique. I am conscious Mr. Talbot wants to contribute as well on this. Could he also outline any engagement that Chambers has had with the Department on this?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: That is really coming across. I will declare an interest. I have a small connection with Waterford Crystal going back many years. I would be grateful if Mr. Talbot could outline any contact Chambers Ireland has had with the Department so that the committee can get a handle on how far advanced this is.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: All we are hearing from the witnesses is about the opportunity. I am not a massive fan of pilot schemes because I often think they meander on and do not come to a conclusion. Is this something that would lend itself well to a pilot with a specific focus or does the opportunity exist for this to be rolled out everywhere? Many of the witnesses mentioned the need for supports in helping...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Louise O'Reilly: My colleague, an Teachta Cullinane, is someone who favours this as potentially a pilot project if it is not something that will happen right across. The Deputy has a definite preference for that. On the consortia-led model, Chambers Ireland referred to best practices. We love these. They have been done elsewhere where one can simply take somebody else's, not repeat their mistakes and...
