- Covid-19 Task Force: Statements (17 Dec 2020)
Paul McAuliffe: I am reflecting a little bit on Deputy O'Connor's contribution as he said it would be his last contribution for the year. It makes us reflect on the year we have had. Certainly the election in February seems more than just a number of months ago. Since then, we have had to tackle two major issues. One is the impact of the virus itself, and I believe we have managed the virus well in this...
- Public Accounts Committee: Caranua: Financial Statements 2019 (17 Dec 2020)
Paul McAuliffe: I thank the witnesses for attending. Many of my questions are for the Department on how we progress the five asks, but I do not want to move on and allow something unintended to come out of today's meeting. Caranua has been given the opportunity to address the real concerns that have been represented to us as public representatives. One member asked if Ms Downes would apologise to anybody...
- Public Accounts Committee: Caranua: Financial Statements 2019 (17 Dec 2020)
Paul McAuliffe: Does Ms Downes accept that the 13% who were not happy or very happy had issues with the service? As victims, they are just applying. They are not responsible for the design of the system, the method or any of that. I am sure Ms Downes will not want to leave the meeting today with the message going to those 13% that she is not sorry that things did not work out for them or that they were...

- Public Accounts Committee: Caranua: Financial Statements 2019 (17 Dec 2020)
Paul McAuliffe: If Ms Downes were to say today that she regretted that Caranua was not able to do that and that some of those reasons were outside its control, that would go a long way.
- Public Accounts Committee: Caranua: Financial Statements 2019 (17 Dec 2020)
Paul McAuliffe: Ms Downes should not leave today without acknowledging that there is some level of dissatisfaction. It is not being fabricated. To be fair, we all know the reasons for it. However, I feel Ms Downes is doing a disservice to all the good work Caranua may have done by not acknowledging that the service could be better.
- Public Accounts Committee: Caranua: Financial Statements 2019 (17 Dec 2020)
Paul McAuliffe: Regarding the Department, there are clear asks. As the co-ordinating Department, what learnings will the Department of Education take from this process? We hope to get the mother and baby homes report early in January and we do not know if it will have a redress scheme. There may be other redress schemes in the future. What learnings has the State taken from having an independent...
- Public Accounts Committee: Caranua: Financial Statements 2019 (17 Dec 2020)
Paul McAuliffe: Given the upcoming publication of the mother and baby homes report, including, I imagine, calls for redress, it should be more than food for thought. We should prioritise the evaluation of the spending of a vast amount of money from the State's perspective, not in the administration and operation, but from whether we believe it was the appropriate way to address an issue that is there.
