Seanad: Order of Business. (12 Dec 2002)

Mary White: Thank you, a Chathaoirligh.

Seanad: Order of Business. (12 Dec 2002)

Mary White: I object to Senator Norris making a speech.

Seanad: National Tourism Development Authority Bill, 2002: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage. (12 Dec 2002)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister. The Leader of the Seanad is a woman and an example of what a leader should be. We are privileged to have the benefit of her experience.

Seanad: National Tourism Development Authority Bill, 2002: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage. (12 Dec 2002)

Mary White: I am praising the Leader. It is clear to me from every session that both sides of the House are delighted to have a Member of the calibre of Senator O'Rourke to lead the House. She does her job vigorously and makes the Seanad dynamic and exciting. I get bored if matters are not moving fast, but she sets the pace and makes them exciting. I compliment Senator Henry on tabling this amendment....

Seanad: National Tourism Development Authority Bill, 2002: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage. (12 Dec 2002)

Mary White: What did the Senator say?

Seanad: National Tourism Development Authority Bill, 2002: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage. (12 Dec 2002)

Mary White: Women occupy a particular role in business. Generally speaking, they do not have the macho style which is the traditional approach to running a business. They bring their own instinctive qualities to bear, qualities which are different from men's. In my business we were acutely conscious of having a feminine and maternal relationship with our employees. We did not get on with everyone all the...

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill, 2002: Second Stage. (10 Dec 2002)

Mary White: We need clarity.

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill, 2002: Second Stage. (10 Dec 2002)

Mary White: I had not intended to speak on this issue today because I am not adequately prepared. Having worked in the National Building Agency for 14 years, I recognise some of the points made by Senator Finucane have validity. However, I would not blame density for the social behaviour of some tenants. I am appalled that practically 15 years later Senator Finucane, as a county councillor, cannot assert...

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill, 2002: Second Stage. (10 Dec 2002)

Mary White: I am delighted to hear Senator Finucane raising the matter. He should exert his opinion with local authority architects in County Limerick that he does not want architects who believe people should live in a particular way. He has it within his power to get housing schemes appropriate to Newcastle West. As far as I can remember, some NBA houses were built in Newcastle West. Senator Finucane...

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill, 2002: Second Stage. (10 Dec 2002)

Mary White: I have been sitting here all day and would like other Senators to listen to me. (Interruptions.)

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill, 2002: Second Stage. (10 Dec 2002)

Mary White: In 1977 the then Minister, Mr. Jimmy Tully, issued an edict that local authority houses should have gardens and dividing walls and not be open plan. It is within the mandate of local authority officials to have housing schemes appropriate to their area. I recommend that Senator Finucane assert his own authority.

Seanad: Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill, 2002: Second Stage. (10 Dec 2002)

Mary White: If the Senator wants me to, I will help him. I designed a housing scheme in 1977 which the people living in the private housing scheme rejected because it looked like their housing scheme, not look like a local authority housing scheme. I accept there is an issue, but the Members in this Chamber are elected representatives and should give local people the housing they feel is appropriate to...

Seanad: Rail Services and Related Transport Matters: Statements. (14 Nov 2002)

Mary White: People love the train.

Seanad: Lindsay Tribunal Report: Motion. (13 Nov 2002)

Mary White: I wish to make a number of brief comments. I commend the Minister on the speech he delivered earlier. He dealt with the Lindsay report and the action he intends to take in a fulsome and satisfactory manner. I compliment him on the fact that he remained in the House for the entire debate and did not leave when he had made his contribution.

Seanad: Lindsay Tribunal Report: Motion. (13 Nov 2002)

Mary White: As a new Member, I find it disturbing to see Ministers coming and going during debates. I thank the Minister on behalf of all those who suffered for remaining in the Chamber for the debate. I also compliment him for apologising many times during his contribution on behalf of the State for what happened to the people who died and to the families who suffered distress.

Seanad: Community Employment Schemes: Motion. (13 Nov 2002)

Mary White: I thank the Minister of State for staying here to listen to the debate. It is important for him to listen to the contributions of the Members. Some Ministers do not stay here during our discussions. Community employment schemes have been effective as a means of helping unemployed people to move into employment in the open labour market. The success rate is obvious, given that 45% of people on...

Seanad: Community Employment Schemes: Motion. (13 Nov 2002)

Mary White: The Taoiseach constantly makes the point that it is a socialist and inclusive party. Cutting back the schemes for the most vulnerable people in society will send out the wrong signals. It is important the party does not allow this to happen. As an employer who has tried to help people who are long-term unemployed, many of whom have families who cannot get them up for work in the morning, I am...

Seanad: Northern Ireland: Statements. (23 Oct 2002)

Mary White: I am not clear on how much time Members are actually taking.

Seanad: Northern Ireland: Statements. (23 Oct 2002)

Mary White: Perhaps we could extend the debate until 5.05 p.m.

Seanad: Northern Ireland: Statements. (23 Oct 2002)

Mary White: Thank you, a Chathaoirligh, for allowing an extension because I thought the timing went a little adrift earlier this afternoon. I do not want to go back over everything, but I would like to remind everybody in the Seanad that the 1921 Treaty gave 26 counties political freedom from Britain – after about 600 years – but there were Six Counties which were left disenfranchised. There were...
