Seanad: Order of Business (10 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: I have asked for the Tánaiste to attend the House to discuss the issue. The situation is no longer reasonable. The facilities are available to us as an independent state. We can expel the ambassador but it is better to use diplomatic missions. The Tánaiste should fly to Tel Aviv and bring our 14 honourable and brave people home. They are being treated in an abominable fashion by the...

Terry Leyden: Well done, Ned.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Nov 2011)

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: I support what Senators Ó Murchú, Cullinane and Mooney have said about the plight of the 14 courageous Irish people who are now in a dangerous situation as a consequence of their high idealism with regard to the 1.5 million people who are basically prisoners in Gaza.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Deputy Gilmore, accompanied me on a trip to Palestine. He knows what the situation is like on the ground. He is well aware of what is happening on the ground. He should take firmer action in the current circumstances.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: I am discussing it again today.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: I am discussing it in the context of the Israeli situation. There is a contradiction here. Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: I am. I do not agree with Senator Sheahan in this regard. They went out there with the right motivation.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: We should be honest about it. They did not go out there with anything other than good motives.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: I will make another suggestion at this stage. I was the convener of the Friends of Palestine group, the outgoing chairman of which is now the President-elect of this country. If the 14 people in question are not released, I will call on the President to make a statement in his inaugural address on Friday-----

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: -----requesting the release of the 14 Irish people.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: The first mission the President-elect should go on should be to Israel and Palestine. He has been there on many occasions.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: They are not its borders; they are Palestinian borders.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: He is not going to be muted.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Terry Leyden: Senator Coghlan would make a good director himself.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)
