Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of Insurance (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021: Discussion (16 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I am not dealing with just one case. We have to consider this in the context of the significant premiums charged. It is not a case of refusing someone on a particular basis. I am concerned because it may act as a deterrent for people accessing the help and support they need for fear of not being able to at some stage in their life own their own home. I ask the witnesses to acknowledge...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: General Scheme of Insurance (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021: Discussion (16 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: There needs to be transparent measures. If somebody has had no issues arise for many years that should be recognised. If a person is getting counselling and has everything in place, he or she should be rewarded rather than punished in terms of insurance. I will leave it at that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Londonderry Chamber of Commerce and Foyle Port (16 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. The good work they do on collaboration is widely known across the island and internationally. Many other areas have a lot to learn from them. I commend everybody involved on the great work they are doing, the North West Strategic Growth Partnership and the positive cross-border collaboration that exists. The benefits can been seen in every...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Londonderry Chamber of Commerce and Foyle Port (16 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I could not agree more. There is GMIT and the Mayo campus and the collaboration between Mayo University Hospital and Magee. We have successes and successful programmes which Mr. Clancy knows, some of which he was involved in, some of them across the island. How concerned is Mr. Clancy about student mobility across the island, whether North-South, South-North? There are so few students. I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Londonderry Chamber of Commerce and Foyle Port (16 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: The Enniskillen equestrian college is a good example of that. It has 50-50 North-South students. It has developed a niche course. I do think of green energy and the courses that can be done there, specifically to attract people in. I hope that the Cassells report will address the funding model we have for third level and the issues that are there that prevent some of the third level...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Londonderry Chamber of Commerce and Foyle Port (16 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: But I want to be able to catch the train from Castlebar to get to Belfast and go by Derry.

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Covid-19 Tests (15 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: 154. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if the funding of €9 million allocated to higher education institutions for antigen tests will be increased to ensure the expansion of the initiative to include students in private colleges and will not mean a corresponding reduction in the amount received by public institutions (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I have a specific question concerning the financial reporting obligations of community employment schemes and the sponsoring organisations in that context. It is my understanding that small community employment schemes, given the size and the nature of these organisations, were not heretofore required to provide full and audited accounts. My information has come from a community employment...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: Did Dr. McFadden get all of my question?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: Dr. McFadden got the thrust of my message anyway.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I will indeed, and I thank Dr. McFadden. I am asking about this development because it seems to be contradictory in this context. The community employment schemes have enough to try to deal with now. I appreciate Dr. McFadden's offer. That is my only question.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Companies Registration Office: Discussion (15 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: That is perfect. I thank Dr. McFadden very much.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Engagement with Insurance Companies (15 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: In that case, I will be brief. I want to ask the three companies about their policies in regard to providing mortgage protection for people who have suffered from an eating disorder. They may know that a woman recently contacted me in regard to mortgage protection life insurance. Despite having a healthy weight for the last five years and no longer receiving any medical treatment, she was...

Rose Conway-Walsh: None of the insurance companies provides the cover. Do the witnesses have any comment to make on the matter in terms of the insurance industry?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Engagement with Insurance Companies (15 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: The fact that cover is either not available or extortionate costs are being charge.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Engagement with Insurance Companies (15 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: As such, none of them-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Engagement with Insurance Companies (15 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I will raise my query with the other insurance companies and organisations when they appear before us.

European Council Meeting: Statements (14 Dec 2021)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I am sharing time with Deputy Martin Kenny. The reality is that the EU, Britain and Switzerland are the biggest barriers to the global roll-out of the vaccine because they are blocking the TRIPS waiver in the WTO. The EU, including this Government, is prioritising the profit margins of a handful of pharma companies over human life. The official death toll from Covid is 5 million but Oxfam...
