- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (30 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: That is the type of thing we need to be looking at and thinking outside the box. It would be difficult to find another building to provide the centre but that one is physically in place. It is fantastic. Family Carers Ireland has highlighted its requests as an organisation. What are the witnesses thoughts on the Disability Act?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (30 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I thank Ms Cox and Ms Duffy for their contributions today. They were beneficial and apt as we will be finalising our report in the coming days. I hope we will be able to reflect their views in that report. The works that carers have done over the last long number of years has been a constant at the committee. It is important that support is recognised. Deputy Collins has arrived at the...

The remit of the committee is to consider matters relating to services and supports provided by the...

Micheál Carrigy: I thank Ms Campbell.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (30 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I have a few comments and questions. As Ms Campbell probably knows, Scotland was way ahead of Ireland with regard to a national autism strategy. Scotland has learned from issues of concern that came up from that strategy and is now moving forward with positive changes. We as a committee have been looking at some of the work that Scotland is doing and that is why we wanted an opportunity to...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (30 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I thank Ms Campbell and maybe having a discussion or forum to discuss language to see where best people are comfortable is something the committee needs to do. Before we finish the meeting, waiting lists for assessments and services are an issue in Ireland, as is the lack of professional staff to carry out those assessments or provide the interventions needed. What is the current situation...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (30 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I apologise to the committee as I had to leave to attend the Chamber for a few minutes. I thank Deputy Buckley for taking the Chair during that time. I thank our witnesses sincerely, both Ms Campbell and Ms Kinross, for the very informative contributions they have given to our committee members today. It is very beneficial to hear what their views are which arise after having had a...

Micheál Carrigy: I thank Deputy Buckley.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (30 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I must concur with that comment that a lot has been done and there is more to be done. On my own behalf I thank the members who have put a very significant amount of time into this committee. As I already said, this is our 51st or 52nd meeting; we are perhaps the busiest committee in Leinster House, to be quite honest, over the past 12 months. There has been a very significant commitment...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (30 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I am the final speaker. Ms Cox made the comment that cultural change is needed, and I think that is right. Probably a better understanding in society of autism and all of the associated areas around it is needed in general. We are working on it in Leinster House. A number of us have a programme to have Leinster House be one of the first autism-friendly parliaments in the world. Part of...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (23 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I welcome everyone to the 50th meeting of the Joint Committee on Autism and the 22nd public session over the last 12 months. Apologies have been received from Senator Ardagh and before we start today's business I will go through some formal notices. All those present in the committee room are asked to exercise personal responsibility to protect themselves and others from the risk of...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (23 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I am sorry Deputy, but I am going to let in the next speaker. We are going to be tight on time and I wish to let in the four other speakers. If I get an opportunity, I will come back to the Deputy. I am sorry about this. I call Deputy Pádraig O'Sullivan. He does not seem to be with us. I call Deputy Tully.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (23 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: The Minister of State has responsibility for older persons and I ask that plans are future proofed for persons on the autism spectrum. We know from our discussion the numbers are increasing, that is, younger persons on the autism spectrum are going to be older persons. There is always that fear, especially from parents, because suddenly all these supports end at 18 years of age and the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (23 May 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I think it was Dr. Niazi who mentioned mental health services being more appropriate than primary care or vice versa. If a child is referred to the local CDNT, who makes the final decision as to which service is the best? Is it a full clinical team that decides the child would be better off within the CAMHS or staying within the CDNT?

Micheál Carrigy: Dr. Niazi is saying he fits in with and works with the CDNT-----
