Jimmy Harte: I have no problem with getting them and if Senator Norris gives me his, I will use them.
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: Thank you. I have a question related to the environment. Many people go out walking, jogging and cycling and in the summer time in particular they notice how many cans and bottles are on the sides of the roads, country roads in particular. We are trying to attract tourists here. In countries like Germany and other European countries the practice is - like we did years ago - to charge a...
- Seanad: EU Presidency: Statements, Questions and Answers (Resumed) (10 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: The opportunity offered by our holding the Presidency should not be overlooked. This country was dependent solely on British markets for almost all of our trade until 40 years ago. Since 1973, the European market of 500 million people has been open to us and has also allowed us access to other markets globally. Anyone who suggests being in the EU is a backward step is living in the 1920s,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: The left?
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I echo Senator O'Brien's call for an honest debate on policing, especially on rural Garda stations. Crime levels have reduced by 12% in the past year. The previous Government should take some credit for that as the drop did not occur since last February alone. While I agree with the Senator that policing should be discussed, I must point out to members of the Opposition, but not those in...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: It is on inviting the Minister to the House.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I spoke to a local sergeant in Carrigart in Donegal, a rural station. He read from a newspaper that Sinn Féin members said last summer they were monitoring the activities of Carrigart Garda station because they were not happy with how the law was being applied there. The local sergeant was applying the law and Sinn Féin was not happy with the arrangements. This was in the local press....

- Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I ask for a debate with the Minister for Justice and Equality.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I support the call for the Minister to be invited to the House at some stage. I am not seconding the amendment. The local stations in Donegal were always monitored by Sinn Féin, but for the wrong reasons.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I wish the Minister would come in to address the issue.
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I agree with Senators about the Garda stations; we should ask the Minister to come to the House to discuss this. There was an incident last night in the St. Johnston area of Donegal, near the border with Derry, in which a young guy was injured in a punishment shooting at his home. The issue is not whether the Garda stations should remain open; it is whether there should be more gardaà on...
- Seanad: Report of Advisory Group to the Forum on Patronage and Pluralism in the Primary Sector: Statements, Questions and Answers (1 May 2012)
Jimmy Harte: I thank Senator Jim D'Arcy for highlighting my letter in yesterday's edition of The Irish Times which was based on a debate on the integration and survival of small schools. I pointed out that Northern Ireland seems to be ahead of the curve compared to the position here, for which credit must go to Minister O'Dowd, and I congratulate him on that. There is a more focused debate in Northern...
- Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2012: Committee Stage (Resumed) (30 Apr 2012)
Jimmy Harte: Senator Darragh O'Brien, who has touched on this issue on previous occasions, worked in the insurance business in a previous life, as did I, and we probably have similar views on pension funds. Basically, the amendment proposes that the Government should borrow money from private pension funds to fund infrastructure. At present, the Government cannot borrow money from anywhere except from...
