Seanad: Order of Business (17 Oct 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: The Sinn Féin Senators are very touchy today.

Seanad: Project 2040 and Transport Matters: Statements (20 Sep 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome the Minister to the House. I am glad to have an opportunity to discuss Project Ireland 2040. It is somewhat disconcerting to find myself discussing a project with a terminal date which is probably beyond my actuarial life expectancy. The Government is great at looking into the future. I am reminded of Joe Stalin in Russia. When things were not going too well in Russia, Joe...

Seanad: Project 2040 and Transport Matters: Statements (20 Sep 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am not too sure I would recommend that. This Government definitely takes the biscuit. Joe Stalin would be impressed by the methodology here. Anyway, we have a chance to discuss this plan. It seems to me that transport is one of the few areas in which we are unambitious as we seek to project into the future. If we are going to address the very serious problems in this country's...

Seanad: Project 2040 and Transport Matters: Statements (20 Sep 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I suppose that is part of politics. I regularly use all modes of public and private transport with the exception of the DART. It is fair enough to say that none of them is up to scratch. None of them has the confidence of the paying public. None of them seems to be equipped to serve the needs of Ireland into the future. Fianna Fáil welcomes the much-needed investment in Ireland's...

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Sep 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I welcome back all my colleagues and staff as well. I had not planned to speak on the policing issue. I look forward to studying the report, which has been welcomed in principle by my party's justice spokesman, Deputy O'Callaghan. I echo what Senator Feighan stated in respect of supporting the Garda. It is incumbent on us as elected representatives, especially in the Oireachtas, to stand by...

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Sep 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: A Listowel man.

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Sep 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: Should we not be old enemies?

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Sep 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: A shark, yes.

Seanad: Post Office Closures: Motion (19 Sep 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I second the Fianna Fáil motion put forward by Senator Leyden. I welcome the Minister to the House. If I could go off-message for just a moment, I commend him for the support that he and the Taoiseach are giving to a hugely important project in my area of north Kerry, namely, the Shannon LNG project, which now has the backing of a new developer, New Fortress Energy. I thank the...

Seanad: Post Office Closures: Motion (19 Sep 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: To return to the matter at hand, I join Senator Leyden in his declaration of support for the post office network. I do not buy into the rural Ireland saga of neglect, but it is there. There is no point in me going over it again. We have witnessed the withdrawal of so many services throughout rural Ireland. It is quite depressing. I come from a business background in the town of Listowel,...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am sure the Leader has already commented on the issue of the amalgamation, to put it kindly, of the Irish Examinerand The Irish Times. This is an historic event for those of us who are daily readers of the Irish Examinerand what we at home call "the paper". The suppression or closure of a newspaper title is always sad. I am happy that both parties have confirmed they will secure as many...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: He stood by his principles. He stood on the Fianna Fáil ticket thereby ensuring that an election would take place. He only won it by a squeak, but nonetheless a win is a win, and he got a fresh mandate from the people which stood to him in his old age in Áras an Uachtaráin

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: Perhaps the present incumbent would benefit from a good contest. That is all I have to say.

Seanad: Heritage Bill 2016: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (11 Jul 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I listened with interest to the points that have been forcefully made by the last two speakers. I sympathise with them to an extent. I may stand corrected on Standing Orders but I understand that it is not possible to move a deferment of the issue and we are effectively in a position where we either approve the amendments or do not, in which case, I have to state that Fianna Fáil is...

Seanad: Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2017: Second Stage (10 Jul 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I will not take up anything like that amount of time. I welcome the Minister to the House. Clearly, this Bill has been thrashed out at excruciating levels in the Lower House, and I do not propose or anticipate that there would be a similar filibustering in this House. At least, it will not come from the Fianna Fáil side because we support the Bill. In fact, it was Fianna Fáil in...

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (9 Jul 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: It reads better in Greek.

Seanad: Education (Digital Devices in Schools) Bill 2018: Second Stage (27 Jun 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: When is it proposed to take Committee Stage?

Seanad: National Archives (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (27 Jun 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I thank the Acting Chairman for offering me this opportunity to welcome back a great friend and colleague, former Senator Pat Moylan who was Cathaoirleach from 2007 until 2011. Mr. Moylan was an excellent Cathaoirleach who was very popular and well respected in the House, as all our Cathaoirligh have been. We have been very fortunate. It is good to see him looking so well.

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jun 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I note the upcoming motion. I do not want to pre-empt it, but it is great we are accepting and realising the suffering of a great number of people because of their sexual orientation. I commend Senator Nash on his motion. I note an amendment to it has been tabled and, like Senator Bacik, I would prefer if we could get consensus on this because it is too important to be messing around with it.

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jun 2018)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am very proud as a Fianna Fáil member that it was a party colleague of mine, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, who steered through the legislation, notwithstanding the wonderful work of Senator Norris and others who fought a lone fight for a long time.
