Seanad: Yeats 2015: Statements (9 Jun 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I wish to start by thanking Senator Maurice Cummins for scheduling the statements, which are very significant in the week in which we will celebrate the 150th birthday of W.B. Yeats which takes place on Saturday. It is a very special time for us in Galway. I note in particular what Senator Lorraine Higgins has said. We will reopen Thoor Ballylee, Yeats’s ancestral home this Saturday....

Seanad: Yeats 2015: Statements (9 Jun 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: We have the opportunity to co-market Sligo, Dublin and Galway through the Wild Atlantic Way and let us do that. I commend Senator O'Keeffe on the year she has had and long may the work continue. However, we should not forget Thoor Ballylee as part of the national picture.

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Disability Services Provision (12 May 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. I ask that the Minister of State at the Department of Health with special responsibility for disability, mental health and older people, Deputy Kathleen Lynch, make a statement on when the long-promised mobility allowance scheme will be made available for people with disabilities. I propose to outline some of the hardships being suffered by...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Disability Services Provision (12 May 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: While I think the Minister of State for his reply, it was no better than the answer I received from the private secretary last January. The Minister of State really is putting it on record here that four and a half months later there has been no movement. That is not good enough. The Minister of State now is telling me that the health (transport support) Bill will come to the House some...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Disability Services Provision (12 May 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: That is great, but has he concern for those who are not in receipt of payments under any scheme? I seek the exact date and wish to ascertain what concern the Minister of State has for those people who are not in any scheme. I am cross about this issue because I am fed up with it.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 May 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I support the need for an urgent debate on language schools as this situation is happening way too frequently. We are an embarrassment. It is totally unfair to the poor young people who spend their money this way. It is letting everybody down. Could the Leader arrange for the Minister for Education and Skills to come to the House to speak on this issue? It has gone on for many years....

Seanad: Order of Business (5 May 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: As a person from the west, an area which badly needs jobs, I support everything about the IDA in terms of jobs but I would never support its intervention in respect of the sovereignty of the people in the democratic process. What is the Government's role regarding this man's abuse of his position? I would like to hear a reply to that question.

Seanad: Report of the Working Group on Seanad Reform 2015: Statements (5 May 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The Leas-Chathaoirleach will not be surprised that I seek an extension of time. This is, in one phrase, une oeuvre formidable. Former Senators O'Toole, Manning and Magnier have done well and have struck a good balance throughout. They have achieved what the Irish public wanted - a good strike forward for universal suffrage. I support the recommendation that 30 seats would be elected by the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Future Funding of Higher Education: Expert Group (22 Apr 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I welcome the delegates and apologise for missing the start of the meeting. We had the Minister for Education and Skills in the Seanad and I did not want to miss the opportunity to ask her questions. I very much liked Mr. Cassells's summary of the issues, particularly his outlining of four areas on which we should focus into the future. As other speakers noted, we have heard some of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Future Funding of Higher Education: Expert Group (22 Apr 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I am coming to the issue of employability. As Mr. Cassells said, practice opportunities are vital for graduates to build team-working and other skills on top of their qualifications. However, the internships being offered in many cases are not devised with the young person's development in mind and some of the participants end up feeling used and abused.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Future Funding of Higher Education: Expert Group (22 Apr 2015)

Fidelma Healy Eames: We are looking at the future of the higher education system. I am wondering, in that context, whether we might have guidelines for employers offering internships in order that everybody will believe he or she is benefiting from them. A good internship is a fantastic experience for those involved. The Chairman might consider my next question to be a little off the point, but it is very...
