Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: W82GO! Weight Management Service (21 Mar 2018)

Alan Farrell: The witnesses' opening statement made for stark reading, particularly some of the statistics provided for our assessment. It occurs to me as someone who will go through this process with his colleagues over the next number of months - it could be six or seven months and well into the autumn before we complete it - that, when trying to figure out how to approach it and what the best model...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: W82GO! Weight Management Service (21 Mar 2018)

Alan Farrell: The need for a database of available services was mentioned. I presume that would be co-ordinated by the HSE. I cannot identify them, as I do not have a grip of the level of services across the regions, but I know of certain facilities that are available locally. Given the proximity to Dublin and Temple Street Children's University Hospital, we are fortunate to have that type of service...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: W82GO! Weight Management Service (21 Mar 2018)

Alan Farrell: That was a very interesting discussion. The witnesses' presence and answers to our questions have been very much appreciated. Before we adjourn, I note on behalf of members my appreciation for the services of Dr. Emer Crooke. This is her last meeting as clerk of the committee. I note with appreciation her professionalism and courtesy over the past number of months in assisting me in the...

An Bille um an Séú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht 2018: An Dara Céim (Atógáil) - Thirty-sixth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2018: Second Stage (Resumed) (20 Mar 2018)

Alan Farrell: I am grateful for the opportunity to discuss the Bill and cast my vote to commence the process of holding a constitutional referendum. Regardless of whether Members believe the eighth amendment should be repealed, I, too, ask all Deputies of all parties and none to allow citizens to have their say on this matter, which is extremely important to many of them. Recent censuses have...

Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Rail Network Expansion (20 Mar 2018)

Alan Farrell: 818. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport the status of the DART underground as distinct from the Metro and Luas with specific reference to the planning for the project; the timeframe for its consideration; the timeframe for the construction of a link between Connolly and Heuston stations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. (8 Mar 2018)

Alan Farrell: I have a question on the LIS. I wanted to understand the nature of how it works as per the accounts from 2016. How is the determination made as to where money is allocated? I am clearly going somewhere with this question.

Local Government Fund Financial Statement 2016
Special Report No. 97 of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the Administration and Collection of Motor Taxes

Alan Farrell: The fact it was sent to the new Department suggests to me that it is something that is only considered under the auspices of rural communities. Is that a fair assessment?

Chapter 8: Central Government Funding of Local Authorities
Local Government Fund Financial Statement 2016
Special Report No. 97 of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the Administration and Collection of Motor Taxes
(8 Mar 2018)

Alan Farrell: I do not wish to be parochial on this committee; I tend not to do that. However, in recent years since the scheme was reintroduced, my experience in my constituency of Fingal, which is nearly 500 km2, received nothing. When the Minister, Deputy Ring, announced a new allocation, I queried it with the council and was told that it had to fund it out of its own allocation. I am trying to...

Alan Farrell: I understand that entirely. That is fine. Can the witnesses give me further information on the criteria and the expenditure under the local authority swimming pool programme, LASPP, which is under the heading we are discussing, if I am not mistaken. I think that it is the local authority rather than Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
