- Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Mar 2004)
Paschal Mooney: I know this is a speech. It is not often I have the opportunity of making such a speech in this House, and I am proud to make it.
- Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2004: Second Stage. (3 Mar 2004)
Paschal Mooney: Yes. I am grateful not only to Senator Brady but also to Senator Mansergh. That my daughter and some of the students from my local school in Drumshanbo are in the Visitors Gallery might have some bearing on the fact that I am able to make a speech at this time. I welcome the Minister of State, who knows Drumshanbo vocational school well, as he was there in another capacity in the past few...
- Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2004: Second Stage. (3 Mar 2004)
Paschal Mooney: Indeed. They are here on a lobby to ensure that the county will not be divided. Who better to do that than members of the young generation from Roscommon and Leitrim who are present? I am pleased indeed that the Minister of State has announced that a review is under way. He will be aware from his time as a Member of the European Parliament that a regional approach to the standardisation of...
- Seanad: Address by Mr. John Hume, MEP. (3 Mar 2004)
Paschal Mooney: I am humbled to be in the presence of such a colossus of the political landscape and to be among distinguished colleagues in the House who have paid John Hume due tribute. I share the view of historian, Senator Mansergh, who equated John Hume to Daniel O'Connell in terms of his activities. One could also refer to Grattan, Parnell, John Redmond, the blood sacrifice of 1621 and the modern Irish...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (3 Mar 2004)
Paschal Mooney: I return to the question of Iraq which has been raised on a number of occasions and perhaps the Leader will give due consideration to providing time for a debate. The reason I raise this matter is that the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Cowen, who is President of the Council, was in New York last week. In the past few days we have seen more horrific images from Baghdad and other cities...
- Seanad: Garda Síochána Bill 2004: Second Stage. (2 Mar 2004)

- Seanad: Garda Síochána Bill 2004: Second Stage. (2 Mar 2004)

- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Mar 2004)
Paschal Mooney: I object to those disparaging remarks about Connacht.
- Seanad: Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (26 Feb 2004)
Paschal Mooney: I have listened with great interest to Senator O'Toole and have great sympathy with his position. There is a degree of inequity in the separation of teachers and gardaÃ, both of whom are employed by the State after their training. I appeal to the Minister of State to reflect on the contribution made forcibly by Senator O'Toole. Will he consider some form of transition period, perhaps of 12...
- Seanad: Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (26 Feb 2004)
Paschal Mooney: Having worked in RTE for the past 25 years, I realise that if a survey were carried out, it could be guaranteed that three quarters of those with a BA are not teachers. I question whether those who do a BA in university only end up as teachers.
- Seanad: Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (26 Feb 2004)
Paschal Mooney: That was the inference.
- Seanad: Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (26 Feb 2004)
Paschal Mooney: I thank Senator Browne. I stand corrected if I am wrong. I understood the Senator to have said that those who take BA degrees become teachers as there are few other job opportunities open to them.
- Seanad: Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (26 Feb 2004)
Paschal Mooney: I thought the Senator said BA. I bow to the greater wisdom of Senator Fitzgerald who works in the teaching profession. I made my intervention with the Minister in an attempt to argue within the narrow context of the amendment, which is specific to teacher training colleges. Of course, one can argue about another range of categories where people with the necessary skills could, and do, work as...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Feb 2004)
Paschal Mooney: Ba mhaith liom cúpla focal a rá faoin dÃospóireacht ar an Ghaeilge san Eoraip. As the Cathaoirleach will be aware, the ongoing debate on the status of the Irish language in the European Union was initiated in the Seanad by Senator à Murchú and others. If I recall correctly, the Leader made a commitment to pursue the matter. Not a day passes without the newspapers referring to the debate...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Feb 2004)
Paschal Mooney: In light of newspaper reports this morning about the Garda intention to roll out the lo-call informer telephone service, with which those in the south east will be familiar and which the rest of the country will now experience, I ask the Leader to get assurances from the Garda Commissioner and from the political master, the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, that this scheme will...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Feb 2004)
Paschal Mooney: While nothing came of it, I was in the right and that person was in the wrong. There is a danger inherent in this which affects everybody.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Feb 2004)
Paschal Mooney: Yes. My concern is that whenever the public is relied upon to phone in because they do not like something they see on the roads, the situation is open to abuse. I have had no assurances from any quarter that this service will be monitored to ensure that those driving safely and with a high degree of propriety, as most do, will not be subjected to complaints from those who, for reasons best...

- Seanad: European Parliament Elections (Amendment) Bill 2003: Second Stage. (12 Feb 2004)
Paschal Mooney: It did not do you any harm.
