Hospital Accommodation. (21 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: I congratulate the Minister on this gimmick of the year award and——

Hospital Accommodation. (21 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: I suggest he gets a CD into his ministerial Mercedes and listens to music on the way to Limerick, rather than coming up with these ideas. Did the Minister for Health and Children put the suggestion to him or did he come up with it, himself? If it was put to him or when he came up with the idea, did he not think of asking the director of the medical corps if it was actually possible to use St....

Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: Once again I have listened to the moral indignation of the Tánaiste. She was the major shareholder in a company that has left many small family businesses——

Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: ——with debts of €20 million. Will she arrange to have them paid? She was the major shareholder of IFI.

Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: The Tánaiste talks about Gama Construction but for more than two years she left many small family businesses without payment.

Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: The Tánaiste should put moral indignation in its proper place. Her Government was the major shareholder — 51%.

Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: The Government was the major shareholder but it has put many of these families out of business.

Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: Two years later they have not received any payment. That puts Gama Construction in the ha'penny place.

Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: That is why he was promoted.

Garda Síochána Bill 2004 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (20 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: I welcome the opportunity to speak on this Bill. Deputy Deenihan mentioned Garda Patrick O'Halloran who was shot in my home town, Baltinglass, in 1924. Most people would never even realise that he had existed; nothing commemorates him. He was shot while following raiders after a bank robbery in the town. Perhaps we might commemorate him as part of the Wicklow 400th anniversary celebration....

Garda Síochána Bill 2004 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (20 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: Whether one breaks the law by one mile or 50 miles, one deserves the punishment that goes with the crime. Gardaí should not involve themselves in the administration of road traffic offences. Section 9 deals with the appointment of the Garda Commissioner. It is often said on some of the popular chat shows that the Garda Commissioner should be appointed from outside the Garda Síochána. I...

Garda Síochána Bill 2004 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (20 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: That is to be borne in mind. There are always strong calls for gardaí to attend matches in Wicklow, but it is not something I would wish on any garda.

Garda Síochána Bill 2004 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (20 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: I have not even got to deal with the main elements of the Bill which are the inspectorate and the ombudsman. In section 31 the Minister appears to reverse the abolition of the dual mandate. It is perhaps sad that the Commissioner is required to establish a committee to liaise with the public to find out what they want. A local garda used always know what the public wanted. I am delighted to...

Garda Síochána Bill 2004 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed). (20 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: He was a native of Gort.

Economic Competitiveness. (20 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: The Government will not implement it.

Economic Competitiveness. (20 Apr 2005)

Billy Timmins: The lack of competitiveness mentioned by my colleague, in addition to the failure of a product to evolve, has had a devastating effect on Wicklow in the past couple of weeks. The Minister says we are in top place in Europe but that is little consolation when jobs can be moved to other countries. A total of 140 jobs at AO Smith Corporation in Bray were lost last week while 94 jobs will be lost...
