Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Plus a deep fat fryer in the back of the vehicle.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Did we get an answer on the INTERREG VA programme project?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I think I have used up more than my time. I have a tendency to do that. I am fairly sure that Senator Buttimer will bring Mr. Meally back in to either extol or take apart the grant system and tell us what needs to be changed or not.

Raise the Roof: Motion [Private Members] (12 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We need to raise the roof. I am not the first Deputy to repeat the following figures: a 15% increase in rents, a 22% increase in house prices and a 19% increase in homelessness. We have all probably taken a look at Daft. Across Louth, there are 18 houses for rent. In Dundalk, the corresponding figure is nine. Anecdotally, in relation to issues I try to deal with, a number of my...

Payment of Wages (Amendment) (Tips and Gratuities) Bill 2022 [Seanad]: Second Stage (7 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: The Government will have a fair amount of agreement across this House on the absolute necessity of this legislation. It is difficult to think that anybody will get up and speak against it in the sense that what we are dealing with, as Deputy O'Reilly put well, is a situation whereby employers are robbing the wages of workers. That is abhorrent to most, if not all, right-thinking people. It...

Planning and Development (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2022: Second Stage (Resumed) (7 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: The Minister will probably get a great deal of agreement across the House that this process is very rushed. It is lastminute.com. We are dealing with planning. I think we could all accept that we started from a point of having very poor planning regulation in this State. We all know what the impact has been on regular people in that regard. Much of that has been in the public domain for...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Apprenticeship Programmes (7 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I wish to raise the issue of workforce planning and how we are obviously lacking in certain skill sets. What is the input from the regional skills framework and from departmental heads in relation to filling those spaces? If we are talking about add-on courses for retrofit and whatever, could we look at apprenticeships from a point of view of fitting them into the actual base...

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition on Adding Chefs to the Critical Skills List Now to Save Irish Hospitality: Discussion (7 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I was having my own technical difficulties. I thank the Cathaoirleach and the committee for dealing with this issue . Fair play to Mr. Lynn. This is an issue about which we have all heard at constituency level. I got it from Mr. Lynn. There are a number of hotels and other businesses that are under pressure and that would have contacted me in the past while. We all know the importance...

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition on Adding Chefs to the Critical Skills List Now to Save Irish Hospitality: Discussion (7 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: That is not to take away. Senator Buttimer has played his part in the sense that this meeting is happening.

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition on Adding Chefs to the Critical Skills List Now to Save Irish Hospitality: Discussion (7 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: There was the third level difficulty, even if one gets onto the critical skills.

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition on Adding Chefs to the Critical Skills List Now to Save Irish Hospitality: Discussion (7 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: In fairness, a promise has been made here to follow up on this and to ensure it is put before the correct people who can make it happen. Probably the best thing to do is that Mr. Lynn do a synopsis of what the actual needs are. Given that he is moving beyond needing chefs, it is those requirements. We know about all the businesses and industries that are crying out for people and cannot...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Humanitarian Crisis Response to Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: Department of Foreign Affairs (6 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: Gabhaim buĂochas leis an Aire agus le hoifigigh na Roinne.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Humanitarian Crisis Response to Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: Department of Foreign Affairs (6 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are in very much changed circumstances. We could see this at the Conference on the Future of Europe. We saw how the language and some of the recommendations changed. How could it be any other way? The Minister talked about the commentary around the war and the fact that most of the expert commentators got it wrong. Vladimir Putin must have been listening to the same level of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Humanitarian Crisis Response to Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: Department of Foreign Affairs (6 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: We are not signed up to anything specifically at this point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Humanitarian Crisis Response to Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: Department of Foreign Affairs (6 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I know. I am certainly not saying that. It was just to seek clarity because I heard it said a number of times.

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (Supplementary)
(6 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: I will follow on from where the Chair finished. On commercial bus operators, I accept what the Minister has said, which is that an NTA proposal would be required and that he is not against extending the 20% reduction to such operators. Am I correct in saying that the 50% reduction in student fares works by operators cutting their fares for such people in half and then getting something like...

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (Supplementary)
(6 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: The Chair is right. Some operators are very worried. They want to be able to tell their potential customers when this is to come in because some will be making decisions about college on the basis of whether there is a commuter service that they can afford. I am sorry; I stopped the Minister halfway through.

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (Supplementary)
(6 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: That 70% is what is being talked about at the minute. That is the operators' understanding.

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2022
Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (Supplementary)
(6 Jul 2022)

Ruairí Ó Murchú: There will be a 50% reduction and the commercial bus operators will get 70% of that 50%.
