Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I rise to thank the Local Authority Members Association, LAMA, for an excellent initiative it launched during a training seminar which took place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of last week. The initiative relates to mental health. I commend that association and the Association of Irish Local Government, AILG, which also held a training seminar on Saturday, the emphasis of which was...

Seanad: Public Transport: Motion (3 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I will share time with Senator Cassells. We will take three minutes each. I am very happy to support this motion, which Senators Kyne and Buttimer and the Fine Gael group have tabled. There is almost nothing to object to in it. It is all very positive. I had not even considered it a motion just on public transport, which is what the screen is telling us it is, because it is not really...

Seanad: Public Transport: Motion (3 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I thank the Senator. It did.

Seanad: Public Transport: Motion (3 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: It did. Perhaps Senator Boyhan should cycle too. It would probably be of benefit to us all to get a bit more exercise. That modal shift should not only be to public transport, although public transport is very useful. Although Senators Boyhan and McDowell probably do, many people may not remember the furore over the quality bus corridor for the 46A taking over a lane of traffic of two...

Gerry Horkan: There is party loyalty for you.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Revised National Development Plan: Discussion (3 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: I thank the witnesses. I read the opening statements as they came into us and I listened to the meeting earlier from my room. Deputy Smith referred to MetroLink and metro generally and there seems to be a little bit of confusion, certainly to my mind, as to what is now the definition of metro. Could I get a definition from the witnesses? Where is the metro project? Initially the upgrade...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Revised National Development Plan: Discussion (3 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: It would be fair to say that this current NDP has less ambition for the green line than the previous NDP. The previous NDP was suggesting that there would be a metro upgrade to Sandyford, and that is gone.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Revised National Development Plan: Discussion (3 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Where are the metrics? If there was a plan in 2016, 2017 or whenever the previous NDP was, to say that we needed to upgrade metro to at least as far as Sandyford, based on the growth projections for Cherrywood - which are very much in their infancy but at the same time they are absolutely out there - I would argue that the metrics need to look at the thousands of units being added in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Revised National Development Plan: Discussion (3 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: On the upgrading, it is fair to say that there was a suggestion in the last NDP that we would have a metro to Sandyford. When has that been deferred to?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Revised National Development Plan: Discussion (3 Nov 2021)

Gerry Horkan: Perhaps we should have had this meeting next Wednesday rather than this Wednesday but anyway, I do not believe that any of us knew until today that the strategy was going to be published next Tuesday. I was talking to another Deputy about this only yesterday, and he heard a rumour that it was to be published tomorrow.
