- Seanad: Dental Services (26 Jan 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. Gabhaim buÃochas léi as ucht teacht isteach chun an cheist seo a phlé. Tá an fhadhb seo beag, b'fhéidir, i gcomhthéacs na tÃre, ach tá sà mór dóibh iad siúd ar a bhfuil sà ag cur isteach. The major cutbacks that have been made to dental services throughout the country since budget 2011 have had a big impact in smaller rural areas. These...

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: They might not have to spend half a day travelling.
- Seanad: Dental Services (26 Jan 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: The Minister of State mentioned that the Carraroe clinic was recently upgraded for reasons of safety and standards. Does that mean the clinic in Carna which was upgraded only in the last year or so is not up to a sufficient standard? It is my understanding that the clinic was only set up in the last year or so. If so, how did that happen? The Minister of State has not addressed the issue....
- Seanad: Agriculture and Fisheries: Statements, Questions and Answers (26 Jan 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. I would like to raise a number of issues in this debate, which I welcome. I echo Senator Comiskey's thoughts on the flat rate payment, as it could be positive for small rural farmers. There are two types of farming. Farmers engaged in industrial type production are doing reasonably well and driving export-led growth, which is welcome, but many small rural...
- Seanad: Agriculture and Fisheries: Statements, Questions and Answers (26 Jan 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I welcome that definition. I refer to the issue of branding. While exports have increased, much of the prime beef is used for burgers in McDonalds restaurants throughout Europe. Surely there is a great deal of scope to enhance the value of these products. Where does the Minister stand on the branding issue and increasing the value of grass-fed beef? I refer to the pathways for growth...
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jan 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Ba mhaith liom tacú leis an éileamh atá déanta ag an Seanadóir Fidelma Healy Eames maidir le cúrsaà oideachais. Tá an cheist a d'ardaigh sà thar a bheith tábhachtach agus ba cheart à a phlé chomh luath agus is féidir. Tuigim go bhfuil an tAire Cumarsáide, Fuinnimh agus Acmhainnà Nádúrtha, Deputy Rabbitte, le teacht isteach chugainn uair éÃgin le labhairt faoi cúrsaÃ...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I dtosach báire ba mhaith liom ardmholadh a thabhairt maidir leis an dÃospóireacht a bhà ann i dtaobh cúrsaà Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta. Gabhaim buÃochas leis na Seanadóirà a labhair sa dÃospóireacht agus leis an Aire Stáit. Tugaim ardmholadh go háirithe do na Seanadóirà a labhair as Gaeilge. Le cúnamh Dé, beidh cúpla duine eile dóibh ann an chéad uair eile. I ask the...

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: It is a cover up.
- Seanad: Recent Developments in Eurozone and European Council: Statements (16 Dec 2011)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Recent Developments in Eurozone and European Council: Statements (16 Dec 2011)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I wish to echo much of what Senator Barrett already has said. This agreement really is pushing the State towards further austerity and such austerity is not working. The State already has taken austerity of â¬20 billion, 440,000 people are unemployed and this mechanism will not improve this position. I also welcome the call by Labour Party Members for a referendum because if the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Dec 2011)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Ba mhaith liom aontú leis na Seanadóirà a bhà ag moladh Michael Fassbender agus Brendan Gleeson ó thaobh an éacht atá déanta acu ainmniúcháin a fháil le haghaidh na Golden Globes. Creidim go bhfuil scannán beag Ãireannach â "Pentecost", le Peter McDonald â taréis ainmniúcháin a fháil ar an ngearrliosta le haghaidh na Oscars. Gabhaim comhghairdeas leo uilig. Tá súil...
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Dec 2011)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: We only hang out in the cafeteria, but the food is equally good in it. Sin é. On a more serious note, ba mhaith liom Nollaig shona a ghuidhe do gach duine. Tá súil agam go dtiocfaimid ar ais slán an bhliain seo chugainn. It will not be a Nollaig shona, as has been mentioned. I second the call by my colleague, Senator Cullinane. After Christmas, one of the debates we should have is...
- Seanad: Pupil-Teacher Ratio (15 Dec 2011)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Táimid buÃoch den Aire as teacht isteach ar an gceist seo, ceist atá tábhachtach agus atá ag tarraingt go leor cáinte ar fud na tÃre, sna scoileanna tuaithe go háirithe, maidir leis an chóimheas atá molta ó thaobh scoileanna beag. I am grateful to the Minister for Education and Skills for attending the Chamber. I have been inundated with calls, as he has, about the proposal made...
- Seanad: Pupil-Teacher Ratio (15 Dec 2011)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Will the Minister confirm that, when he takes on board the results of the review and the process of amalgamation is discussed, he will take into consideration linguistic issues in Gaeltacht schools? Will he allay fears that in some scenarios teachers will teach up to four classes within one classroom? That would make the task more difficult.
- Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (15 Dec 2011)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. Is mór agam deis a fháil labhairt ar an mBille iontach tábhachtach seo. SÃlim go raibh éagóir á dhéanamh ar daoine le mÃchumais sna moltaà a bhà déanta i dtús. Is maith an rud é go bhfuil an smaoineamh sin curtha ar leac oighir faoi láthair. Tá súil agam go dtarraingeofar siar go hiomlán an moladh maidir le daoine le mÃchumais. SÃlim go...

- Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (15 Dec 2011)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Nà raibh sé i gceist agam teacht isteach an dara uair, agus nà thiocfainn murach an freagra a fuair muid ón Aire. I had not intended to speak a second time on this but I found myself getting very frustrated and angry with the Minister's reply to the questions because she was going around the houses and not addressing the issue. I come from a county with probably the highest incidence of...
- Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (15 Dec 2011)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: This is not fair and is very draconian. It is disgraceful that it is being introduced by the Government at this stage. The Minister also spoke about encouraging people back to work. However, benefits such as the back to education allowance are being cut and the type of child care that is required is not provided. We all aspire to the Scandinavian scenario but the Government is cutting back...
- Seanad: Social Welfare Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (15 Dec 2011)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: It is absolutely on the section and the Minister herself brought up these issues.
