- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: I also support my colleague, Senator Mullins, in seeking a debate on farm safety. I was greatly moved recently by an interview on Clare FM, as well as some national interviews given by Eugene Hogan on the tragic death of his brother, Dermot, as a result of a farm accident in County Offaly. I note there have been a couple of tragic farm accidents in County Clare recently. I believe the...
- Seanad: Forestry Bill 2013: Second Stage (1 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Hayes, back to the Seanad. This is the House in which he started his political career in the Oireachtas. It is great to see that he has ascended to the heights of ministerial office, which is well deserved. I offer my sympathies to him on last Sunday's performance.

- Seanad: Forestry Bill 2013: Second Stage (1 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: ----- it did not come from the same forest as the Kilkenny ash. There is always next year. I welcome this legislation. I come from a part of the country where there is very little forestry. Cromwell once described the area of north County Clare from which I come as not having enough water to drown a man, enough earth to bury a man or enough wood to hang a man. We could do with more trees,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (30 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: I support the calls made today for a debate with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Flanagan, on the undocumented Irish in the United States. There are an estimated 50,000 undocumented Irish people living and working in the United States. These people who come from every corner of this country have had their hopes raised and dashed time and again over the past number of years,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: I agree that we need to start having a serious debate on Seanad reform. It is 17 months, at a maximum, to the next Seanad election and general election. We will not see too much reform before the next election but I would like to see constructive, positive engagement over the next year or year and a half on what should constitute Seanad reform so it can feed into the various parties'...
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Motor Tax Exemptions (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: I thank the Minister for his response. I was not surprised by his answer and appreciate that a situation allowing the Minister to intervene would compromise the position.
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Motor Tax Exemptions (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: Every case made is a good case, but the case in question is unique and I will make a submission on it to the Minister over the next couple of weeks. I will also talk to the providers involved and perhaps something can be done, because they are providing a genuine community service. I agree they are getting rid of their own rubbish, but they are providing an important service that the local...
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Motor Tax Exemptions (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Alan Kelly. I appreciate the fact that he has come before the House to take this matter. I have not spoken to the client to whom the matter relates, which is why I used the term "details supplied" in the text submitted to the Cathaoirleach's office. The company involved provides significant employment in the tourism sector in County Clare and owns a...
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Motor Tax Exemptions (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: It would be great if the Minister did have it.
- Seanad: Access to Educational and Other Opportunities for People with Disabilities: Motion (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: At 10.30 tomorrow morning.
- Seanad: Access to Educational and Other Opportunities for People with Disabilities: Motion (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: Well said.
- Seanad: Access to Educational and Other Opportunities for People with Disabilities: Motion (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: Senator Ó Murchú never took that.
- Seanad: Access to Educational and Other Opportunities for People with Disabilities: Motion (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: Go raibh maith agat. I understand Senator Darragh O'Brien's frustrations, to be quite frank. Today there are people outside the gate protesting because there is still no recognition of Irish sign language. That is something I would consider inhumane at this stage. At the end of the day people who are deaf are probably the most marginalised and isolated group in Irish society and it is...
- Seanad: Access to Educational and Other Opportunities for People with Disabilities: Motion (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: Senator Darragh O'Brien has to second the amendment.
- Seanad: Betting (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: He could do it online.
- Seanad: Betting (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister and this very important legislation. It was an open goal that citizens and the country should have been scoring for a long time in terms of collecting money from online gambling. As has been pointed out, traditional bookie shops pay rates, taxes and everything else. Just because technology has advanced does not mean that the people who have embraced that technology -...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Services for Victims of Crime: Irish Tourist Assistance Service (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: There is probably an argument for funding from the system being put in place to replace the courts poor box system. The Government will be faced with a dilemma next year. In a situation where we have automatic referral and ITAS is on a shoestring budget, the system will not work. Something will break somewhere along the line.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Services for Victims of Crime: Irish Tourist Assistance Service (24 Sep 2014)
Martin Conway: I thank the witnesses for an interesting presentation. As Deputy McGrath said, it makes sense that the office should be in a city centre location. Why did the organisation move its premises from the Garda headquarters? It made sense to be located just off Harcourt Street because there are many tourist attractions near St. Stephen's Green.

Martin Conway: Did the witnesses feel abandoned?
