Martin Conway: Deputy Martin will be glad to hear that. He will put Senator Leyden on a list.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: Like others, I warmly welcome our new colleague, Senator Craughwell. If my maths are correct, we have a situation now where in excess of 10% of this House has Galway connections. Seven of the 60 Senators have Galway connections.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: That is quite a remarkable achievement. I studied Senator Craughwell's CV in advance of the election and what struck me most was his commitment to teaching and education. I have often said in this Chamber and in other fora that education is the great equaliser. Whatever one's background in society - whether one has a disability, or comes from a poor background - if one gets a quality...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: Like others, I would like the Minister for Finance to come to the Seanad for a debate on banking, but I appreciate that the budget is next Tuesday and that he is probably going to be tied up preparing what is a very important budget for our economic recovery. Post-budget, when he comes in to address the House on budgetary issues, I would like the Leader to make the Minister aware that this...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: That is one step that would facilitate improved customer service at Irish Water and I would like the Leader to communicate that to the chief executive of Irish Water.
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Drugs Payment Scheme Coverage (7 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: I am happy with the Minister's response. I am sure the new evidence, and certainly the testimonials of patients who have used the drug successfully, will be taken into consideration in a review.
- Seanad: Adjournment Matters: Drugs Payment Scheme Coverage (7 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: As the Minister of State will be well aware, people who suffer from multiple sclerosis find the disease very debilitating and compromising. My understanding is, however, that a new drug, Fampyra, gives incredible relief to sufferers, but it is not available as a prescribed medicine under the long-term illness scheme. My question is simple. Does the Minister have plans to provide this drug...

- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Terrorist Offences) (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (7 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: I thank the Minister for initiating this legislation in the Seanad. It is always a good day for the Seanad when a Minister deems it fit and appropriate to do so. I encourage other Ministers to avail of that opportunity as Dáil time can be stretched and vying for slots for it can be competitive. We are always happy to initiate legislation here, particularly in the justice area. This...
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Terrorist Offences) (Amendment) Bill 2014: Order for Second Stage (7 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: I move: "That Second Stage be taken today."
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (7 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: I too would like to support calls for a debate on banking. It is an essential part of our economy. Not having a functioning banking sector means we do not have a functioning economy. Despite the awful things which went on the in past, we should engage in such a debate in a positive way. In addition to the positive news from Shannon Airport, Ryanair today launched its 2015 schedule. I...

Martin Conway: It is all over the media.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (7 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: We are not talking about the President. Rather, we are talking about the Department of Justice and Equality and RIA. It is a disgrace to think that the President, a man of enormous humanity, was refused-----

Martin Conway: -----access to the centre. I would like to know what they have to hide. Why will they not let the President into the centre? It is an absolute disgrace and I call on the Leader to-----

Martin Conway: -----bring the Minister of State, Deputy Ó Ríordáin, to the House as a matter of urgency to find out exactly what is going on.

- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: We are learning from you.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (2 Oct 2014)
Martin Conway: I would like to think that at this stage, the events of recent days have maxed out, as it were. The fact there has been an explanation, an apology and, much more important, new structures put in place for the further appointments to State boards means there is a sincere and genuine attempt to ensure good and positive politics will be the norm in the future.
