- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Business Supports (4 May 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I thank the Minister of State and the Department for the response. I welcome the fact that the Department is developing a small-scale generation scheme for generators above 50 kW to support the deployment of rooftop and ground-mounted solar PV. That is really significant. The Minister of State indicated that the scheme is expected to be launched this year. I hope that will be done as...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (4 May 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I ask that we have a debate with the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Deputy Coveney, on businesses that are still trading with Russia. We had news last week that Pernod Ricard restarted selling Jameson whiskey in Russia since last September. Sean Pollock from the Sunday Independent had a very revealing story. Since September, Jameson has sold almost €16 million of...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 May 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I also wish to congratulate the Leader on her wedding. I congratulate Jarlath and Louis as well and both families. I compliment Senator Keogan on hosting an event in the audiovisual room today with a young girl who is from my parish, Cara Darmody. She is fighting for services for her two younger brothers, Neil and John, who both have severe autism. They are calling for three things in...
- Seanad: National Minimum Wage (Inclusion of Apprentices) Bill 2023: Second Stage (3 May 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I second the Government amendment. I thank the Labour Party for tabling the Private Members' Bill. In particular I acknowledge the work done by Senator Sherlock in this area. I know from being on the committee with her that she has a real passion for this issue and has put an awful lot of work into it. She spoke about it yesterday at the committee. It is important to discuss fair pay for...

Garret Ahearn: But you do not know-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: IBEC and Science Foundation Ireland: Discussion (3 May 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I have a range of questions so I might come in twice. Professor Nolan mentioned removing barriers to participation by always considering the needs of the population at large during his contribution. Gender is a very important part of that. Dr. Freeman spoke about disabilities and trying to get more people with disabilities to play a role. Ireland has one of the lowest rates of...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: IBEC and Science Foundation Ireland: Discussion (3 May 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I thank the guests. I might come in again in the next round.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: IBEC and Science Foundation Ireland: Discussion (3 May 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I refer to the contribution Ms McGee made at the start of the meeting. She made a number of good points that she thought we should focus on and the second one was in support of the dual investment in technology and talent and to introduce more sustainable business practices in areas such as energy efficiency. If I go back to Tipperary and say that we should focus on that, the first thing...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: IBEC and Science Foundation Ireland: Discussion (3 May 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I can see most of the things Ms McGee has talked about today. My home town is Clonmel. I can see it being hugely beneficial to our town. We now have a university in the town. We are building a university on the Kickham Barracks site in conjunction with Tipperary Education and Training Board, ETB. It will be a dual campus for further and higher education together. We have many...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: IBEC and Science Foundation Ireland: Discussion (3 May 2023)
Garret Ahearn: The last thing Ms McGee said was "a destination for talent". I also see that in Clonmel. People do not come only because they are given an offer or a wage. They look for quality of life. The Covid-19 pandemic played a key part in that. They look at the quality of life their family might have as regards education, health and recreation almost more than anything at the moment. One of the...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Apr 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I am delighted that Senator Gallagher is the Acting Leader, as I want him to see whether he can arrange a debate with someone from his area, namely, the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Deputy Humphreys, about funding-----
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Apr 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I am referring to funding under the rural regeneration and development fund, RRDF. There have been incredible announcements in recent months, particularly relating to the Acting Leader's constituency, of funding received under a number of schemes, including the RRDF. County Tipperary was successful in that regard in the last round, with us receiving more than €30 million for three...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (27 Apr 2023)
Garret Ahearn: The Acting Leader will support her.
- Seanad: Sectoral Employment Order (Construction Sector) 2023: Motion (27 Apr 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I move: That Seanad Éireann approves the following Order in draft: Sectoral Employment Order (Construction Sector) 2023, a copy of which has been laid in draft form before Seanad Éireann on 5th April, 2023.”
- Seanad: Sectoral Employment Order (Construction Sector) 2023: Motion (27 Apr 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I, too, welcome the pupils from the school and the distinguished guests from Wisconsin. They are in very good company with Councillor Michael "Moegie" Maher. They will certainly enjoy their stay. Regardless of how long they stay in Galway, it will definitely be memorable with Moegie – that is for sure. I wish them well on their trip. This is Deputy Richmond's first time in the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Sectoral Employment Order (Construction Sector) 2023: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (26 Apr 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I welcome the Minister of State to the committee for the first time. I wish him well in his new role and look forward to working with him over the next two years hopefully. The point he made from the very start is to recognise that this is a minimum rate. Certainly from the people I know in Tipperary who work in the construction sector, an awful lot of them would be on a higher rate than...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Sectoral Employment Order (Construction Sector) 2023: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (26 Apr 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I thank the Minister of State. He touched on employment creation. I am thinking back to when Deputy Bruton became Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment and he promised to create 100,000 jobs in five years. I am not sure many of us believed it was possible when we campaigned but now we are in the position that since 2011, 800,000 jobs have been created in this country. This was...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Sectoral Employment Order (Construction Sector) 2023: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (26 Apr 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I just have a brief comment on this.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Sectoral Employment Order (Construction Sector) 2023: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (26 Apr 2023)
Garret Ahearn: One of the challenges we have is that we are the lowest in Europe in terms of creating employment for people with disabilities. The construction sector could play a role in providing employment in this area to try to get us to the European average. What does the Minister of State think we could do in this regard? He can come back to this after answering someone else's questions if needs be.
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Healthcare Infrastructure Provision (20 Apr 2023)
Garret Ahearn: I thank the Cathaoirleach for accepting this matter, which relates to an issue that is very important to us in Tipperary. It is particularly important to Councillor Declan Burgess, who has been working with the HSE for a number of years to try to push this project along in his home town of Cashel. It is infuriating because the process is stuck at a particular stage. St. Patrick's Hospital...
