Coercion of a Minor (Misuse of Drugs Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage [Private Members] (20 Oct 2022)

Denise Mitchell: I am happy to see this Bill being debated on Second Stage today. This Bill is a protection for families, children and communities that face the daily scourge of drug dealers. We have all heard the stories and we have all seen the court reports. It is accepted that despicable drug gangs have been targeting children and exploiting them to move and sell drugs for many years. These...

Domestic Electricity and Gas Disconnections: Motion [Private Members] (18 Oct 2022)

Denise Mitchell: We have tabled this motion because workers and families need action on the cost-of-living crisis now. The Government’s proposal was half-hearted yet again and it did not go far enough. Everyone needs to be protected from disconnections for the cold winter we are facing. Sinn Féin wants this ban on disconnections to happen immediately and to run until March. People cannot...

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2022: Second Stage (13 Oct 2022)

The Bill will give a legal basis to a standalone offence of stalking and harassment and allow for court orders to be introduced to try to prevent these crimes happening. It will also allow for the increase in the term of imprisonment for conspiracy to murder from ten years to life. All of...

Housing for All Update: Statements (4 Oct 2022)

Denise Mitchell: It has been over a year since the Minister, Deputy Darragh O’Brien, launched the Government’s housing plan, but very little has changed. We see families across Dublin languishing on social housing lists for more than 15 and 16 years. Only last week, we saw more than 10,800 people presenting as homeless, a new record. Some 3,220 of those homeless are children. That is some...

Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022: Second Stage (Resumed) (22 Sep 2022)

Denise Mitchell: I welcome the Bill, which is not before its time, considering we have already been fined by the EU for our failure to implement the audiovisual media services directive. The media commission is a much-needed expansion of the role of broadcasting authority. Ireland is playing catch-up with how media have evolved. The Law Reform Commission first mentioned the establishment of something...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: General Scheme of the Local Government (Maternity Protection and Other Measures for Local Authority Elected Members) Bill 2022: Discussion (22 Sep 2022)

Denise Mitchell: I start by welcoming this Bill. I thank the Minister of State and his team for the commitment they have given to it, and now we finally have it up and running. This is a very important Bill and it removes a significant block that prevents women standing for election. I know it is welcomed across all our female councillors. I am looking for clarification on a number of questions. The...

Denise Mitchell: Regarding the temporary substitution in head 8, 19A(1)(c), which the Minister of State briefly touched on with Senator Fitzpatrick, what type of circumstances would be covered? I know he mentions absences due to illness or in good faith or another reason.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: General Scheme of the Local Government (Maternity Protection and Other Measures for Local Authority Elected Members) Bill 2022: Discussion (22 Sep 2022)

Denise Mitchell: On administrative supports, just so I can get this straight in my head, there are two choices been given here. The councillor can have a clean break, take the 26 weeks, and a substitute nominated by the council team will take their place. With regard to the administrative staff, is that staff member employed by the councillor? Is there going to be a procedure for appointing these staff?
