Seanad: Roads Bill 2007: Report and Final Stages (28 Mar 2007)

Diarmuid Wilson: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Gallagher, and the Minister, Deputy Cullen, for taking this Bill through the House. I also thank all Senators who contributed to the debate, especially Senator Paddy Burke. We had a lively Second Stage debate on the Bill but it was worthwhile. The Minister of State took on board some of the topics discussed on Second Stage and aspects of the amendments...

Diarmuid Wilson: Tomorrow morning at 10.30 a.m.

Seanad: Roads Bill 2007 [Seanad]: Committee Stage (20 Mar 2007)

Diarmuid Wilson: It is important that these agencies should be accountable to the Minister when he requests answers from them. I understand from where Senator Paddy Burke is coming in respect of this matter. However, the onus should be on the authorities to answer any specific questions put to them by Oireachtas Members or the Minister. The latter should not be responsible for answering questions from Members.

Diarmuid Wilson: Next Tuesday.

Seanad: Roads Bill 2007 [Seanad]: Second Stage (7 Mar 2007)

Diarmuid Wilson: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Cullen, and his officials to the House. I thank Senator Burke for his positive contribution to the debate, especially his concluding remarks. The Roads Bill 2007 facilitates the introduction of barrier free tolling, redesignation of certain high quality dual carriageways to be motorways and a number of amendments to the Taxi Regulation Act 2003. I welcome the...

Seanad: Roads Bill 2007 [Seanad]: Second Stage (7 Mar 2007)

Diarmuid Wilson: I ask the Senator for clarification on Fine Gael's position on tolls. He stated it was not opposed to tolls but was against private companies benefiting from the tolls. A number of Fine Gael people are claiming that if that party gets into Government the M3 will have no tolls. I would like clarification on that matter.

Seanad: Roads Bill 2007 [Seanad]: Second Stage (7 Mar 2007)

Diarmuid Wilson: I also seek clarification from Senator Paddy Burke on behalf of his party and from Senator McDowell on their policy regarding future infrastructural projects, particularly roads, if, in the unlikely event of them even coming near the present Government at the general election, they need to depend on support from the Green Party, which is opposed to all road building projects. What will they...

Diarmuid Wilson: I move: "That Second Stage be taken today."

Seanad: Business of Seanad (13 Dec 2006)

Diarmuid Wilson: I join in welcoming the Minister of State to a House that is familiar to him as he started his national political career here. I wish him luck in his first ministry. He is following in the footsteps of former Taoisigh and Ministers but I have no doubt he will do so without difficulty. The Department of Education and Science, and those who depend on it for adult and community education and...

Seanad: Schools Building Projects. (13 Dec 2006)

Diarmuid Wilson: There is an urgent need to provide additional permanent accommodation at St. Mary's national school, Virginia, County Cavan. The school has 309 pupils enrolled but was originally built for 200 pupils. A substantial part of the accommodation needs are met by prefabs. The Department has replied to concerns raised by the Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, Deputy...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (13 Dec 2006)

Diarmuid Wilson: I join other speakers in paying tribute to the late, great Andrew J. O'Brien, a man I regarded as a friend. Senator Brian Hayes said that the O'Brien's house in Crubany was an open house where many people went to pay homage to the great man and his wife, a great woman, and to get advice. I was one who made that trip on many occasions to get advice. Andy O'Brien was known for many stories...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (13 Dec 2006)

Diarmuid Wilson: He then proceeded to entertain the gathering for 45 minutes. Andy O'Brien was an elected public representative for more than 44 years. He was a public representative until the day he died. He was an honest, hard-working and funny man. He was a founder member of the Cavan drama festival, former president of the Ulster council of the GAA and, until his death, president of County Cavan GAA....

Seanad: Outdoor Education Centres (5 Dec 2006)

It is situated in Tanagh, on the Cavan-Monaghan border just outside Cootehill. It is set in the heart of the Dromore water system, adjoining Dartrey forest. The centre is located 112 km from both Dublin and Belfast. The original building served as a residence for the land steward...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (11 Oct 2006)

Diarmuid Wilson: I join the words of tribute that have been paid to the late Thomas J. Fitzpatrick. I was privileged to know Tom for as long as I can remember and everything that has been said about him is correct. He was an honourable and decent man. While many people did not realise it, Tom was a native of County Monaghan. He was born in Scotshouse, which is just across the border from Cavan. He was...

Seanad: Road Traffic and Transport Bill 2006: Second Stage (3 Oct 2006)

Diarmuid Wilson: I welcome the Minister and his officials to the House . Like my colleagues, I welcome this legislation. It would have been better to get it right in the first place but we are all human and mistakes are made. There is no doubt mandatory breath testing has saved lives this year. A total of 17 unfortunate people lost their lives in August 2006 but that compares with 24 in 2005 and 34 in...
