- Emergency Planning. (29 Sep 2005)
Billy Timmins: I thank the Minister for his reply. Has the task force been allocated funding since 2001? How is it resourced? Has the task force overseen exercises? If so, have reports been published on how they were carried out and on whether they were successful? In 2003 the Emergency Planning Society recommended to Government that emergency planning should be underpinned by legislation and an emergency...

Billy Timmins: I do not wish to get into a debate about appointees to State boards. However, the Civil Defence, which comprises 6,000 personnel, is an important element of emergency planning. The Minster recently came in for criticism following the appointment of a former Fianna Fáil councillor to lead the body. What expertise has he in this area? It is a strange appointment.

Is it correct that he contacted the embassy not that the embassy contacted the Department of Defence?
- Defence Forces Recruitment. (29 Sep 2005)
Billy Timmins: Does the Minister have any idea why it is difficult to attract females to join the Defence Forces? He mentioned height, which is an old bugbear of mine. If I understood him correctly, the requirement is now 5 ft. 4 in. for both males and females.

Billy Timmins: Does he agree that, in view of the fact that the average height of a woman is less than that of a man, a greater proportion of women are disqualified from joining the Defence Forces?

Billy Timmins: Limerick College has been researching it.
