- Seanad: Sustainable Rural Housing Guidelines: Statements. (28 Apr 2005)
Michael McCarthy: That is exactly the point. The political process is being abused by planning agents. This is wrong. I have seen applications by such agents, which I am convinced were thrown in over the wall of the planning offices, such was the dreadful condition they were in. The standard of the applications was unprofessional and the requests therein were often unrealistic. This only added to the high...
- Seanad: Sustainable Rural Housing Guidelines: Statements. (28 Apr 2005)
Michael McCarthy: Sadly, in one case of which I am aware, the applicant passed away before the planning permission was granted. The situation reached a satisfactory conclusion in terms of what he set out to do, which was to provide for his wife and family after his death. That was a very sad case and it is dreadful to think that the system we all subscribe to and make our living from was responsible for...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (28 Apr 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I have raised this issue several times. A survey conducted by Macra na Feirme, details of which were published in the Irish Examiner this morning, quite clearly illustrates the lack of competition in the insurance sector and in particular demonstrates the discrimination perpetrated by insurance companies against young male drivers. Six profile studies of the seven main insurance companies...

- Seanad: Veterinary Practice Bill 2004: Report and Final Stages. (20 Apr 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I support these amendments. Senator Quinn articulates his views very well. We have to be careful about those to who we give the power to search people's homes. It is a significant authority to invest in anybody and there are prescribed methods by which that should be done. This certainly reflects Senator Quinn's amendment which outlines the only way such a search should be allowed to be...

Michael McCarthy: I acknowledge the Minister and her officials for the manner in which they dealt with this Bill and for the powerful weaponry of the smile and everything else that goes with it. This was difficult legislation involving much dialogue and debate but common sense prevailed for which I thank the Minister and her officials.

Michael McCarthy: I move amendment No. 23: In page 42, line 40, to delete ", the details of which are registered on the Register". This follows on from the debate on Committee Stage and concerns the section dealing with a registered person not using an incorrect title, with an important emphasis on a person who deliberately misleads the public into believing he or she has or uses a title which he or she is not...

- Seanad: Veterinary Practice Bill 2004: Report and Final Stages. (20 Apr 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I move amendment No. 28: In page 56, line 44, to delete ", or the testimony of the applicant". The House discussed this amendment at length on Committee Stage and I have now re-tabled it. The point was well argued on that Stage. The inclusion of "the testimony of the applicant" is impractical in that a host of issues is associated therewith. The Bill itself would be better without that...
