- Seanad: Order of Business (29 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: The Leader has claimed that we did not listen to him, but it seems he did not hear my question which emphasised the urgency of a debate on this matter. Therefore, I am pressing the amendment.
- Seanad: Order of Business (29 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Déanaim tagairt do rud adúirt an Ceannaire agus an leas-Cheannaire inniu maidir leis an muirear teallaigh. Yesterday and today, the Leader and Deputy Leader mentioned that the household charge is part of the EU-IMF deal. I seek clarification on that issue. Perhaps they will indicate at what page in the memorandum of understanding it is stated. We have been looking for it but cannot find...
- Seanad: Small Business: Motion (28 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Thuigeamar sin agus coinnÃmid an ceart an leasú a mholadh nÃos déanaÃ, más mian linn sin a dhéanamh. Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit agus roimh an dÃospóireacht seo. Tá sé thar a bheith tábhachtach. BÃmid ag caint go rialta faoi chúrsaà gnoithe, faoi dhaoine a chur i mbun oibre arÃs agus faoi tacú a tabhairt do chomhlachtaà beaga. Go ginearálta, tacaÃmid le cuid...
- Seanad: Small Business: Motion (28 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: The Minister for Finance has not addressed the fact that the cost of a litre of petrol and diesel has increased so much in recent months. We had an opportunity to change that last week but when the Minister was in the House I did not see any Fine Gael or Labour Party Senators jumping up and down and saying that needed to be done. However, it does need to be done. We have also seen tens of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Ba mhaith liom labhairt faoin reifreann. I note the change of terminology from the Government side of the Seanad, with Senator Bacik talking about a referendum on the reform of the Seanad.
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: The Senator said "reform" but "future" is also good. Is the Taoiseach changing his position on that?
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: We welcome the announcement yesterday about the treaty on the fiscal compact. I note the rhetoric has started already with Senator O'Brien calling it a treaty about Europe. It is not about Europe, it is about a fiscal compact and it is important we stick to the facts on that. The compact will impose more austerity and I call on the Government-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: As my former teacher, Sr. Price, used to say, empty vessels make most noise. Will the Leader give an indication of when the wording of the referendum question will be available? It is important we have a wide and broad debate on this because it will impose spending cuts of â¬6 billion. We have seen that Sinn Féin are not the only people who oppose the treaty. The French Socialist Party...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: It would be fairer to disband it.
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: We are standing up for the people the Senator just talked about. We are showing leadership.
- Seanad: Aistriúchán de Bhillí agus Ionstraimí Reachtúla (27 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. Is deacair do dhuine teacht isteach ar lá chomh breá leis seo ach táim buÃoch de as bheith anseo. Tá an cheist seo ag eascairt ó dhúshlán cúirte a bhà le tógáil ag comhairleoir as Baile Ãtha Cliath maidir leis an Bhille Rialtas Ãitiúil (Muirear Teaghlaigh). Baineann seo leis an leagan Gaeilge de Bhillà Stáit a bheith le fáil. Tá...
- Seanad: Aistriúchán de Bhillí agus Ionstraimí Reachtúla (27 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: NÃl mé sásta leis sin, beag nó mór. NÃor tugadh freagra ar an gceist a chuir mé. Tuigim go bhfuil an tAire Stáit ag rá go bhfuil reachtaÃocht nua ag teacht isteach ach an cheist a chuir mé ná cad iad na Billà nach bhfuil aistrithe, cé mhéad acu atá ann, cénuair atá sé i gceist sin a dhéanamh agus cé mhéad cás a caitheadh amach as na cúirteanna de bharr nach raibh na...
- Seanad: Aistriúchán de Bhillí agus Ionstraimí Reachtúla (27 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Táim ag caint, mar shampla, faoin mhuirear teaghlaigh. Má thógtar duine chun cúirte an féidir a rá nach bhfuil leagan Gaeilge den Bhille ar fáil, más Bille nó ionstraim a chuireann i bhfeidhm é. Ba chóir go mbeadh an Bille agus an ionstraim reachtúil a théann leis ar fáil i nGaeilge. Cad iad na Billà atá achtaithe nach bhfuil ar fáil trà mheán na Gaeilge agus cé mhéad...
- Seanad: Aistriúchán de Bhillí agus Ionstraimí Reachtúla (27 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Sin an cheist a chuir mé: cé mhéad Bille atá i gceist?
- Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2012: Second Stage (27 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. Ba mhaith liom a rá i dtús báire go bhfuilimid i gcoinne an Bhille seo ina iomláine. Is é sin an fáth nár chuireamar sÃos leasú ar Chéim an Choiste. Is dóigh linn go gcuirfidh sé isteach ar na daoine is boichte inár sochaÃ, go háirithe iad siúd sna ceantracha tuaithe. In retrospect, the Government will go down as the most anti-rural Government...
- Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2012: Second Stage (27 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Not by ourselves. Senator Keane said all the taxes must be considered in the global sense. She is absolutely right. We have to ask why this and other measures are being introduced by the Minister to fund local government. It is because we are still paying off bondholders and are potentially paying off promissory notes, if a deal is not done by the end of the month.
- Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2012: Second Stage (27 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: As Senator Keane said we must have our cake and eat it. Some people are getting more of the cake than they should be allowed.
- Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2012: Second Stage (27 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: One is only kicking the can down the road on that issue.
- Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2012: Second Stage (27 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: The Minister is asking our children and our children's' children to pay it at extra interest.
- Seanad: Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2012: Second Stage (27 Mar 2012)
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: We will not go into the whole idea of who is right and wrong. The Minister is eating into my time because he knows I wish to raise a number of points. This is an unfair tax on people living in rural areas because, as the Minister will know, they depend on their cars. Last week we had a debate with the Minister for Finance, and Senators on the Government side hopped up and down about the...
