- Other Questions: Post Office Network (28 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: Letters were sent out from the Department of Social Protection requesting people to switch their payments from the post office to the banks. Surely that undermines the post office network in a determined way. If there is a whole-of-government approach to maintain the post office network, how did this letter go out from a Department?
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: National Broadband Plan Implementation (28 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: When will this be submitted to the European Commission? The Minister gave a date of June 2015 at one stage for state aid approval but where is that now? This looks like a never-ending saga. The broadband plan was announced this time last year, before local and European elections, to great fanfare. It was to resolve issues but, to my mind, nothing has yet happened. When will this formally...
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: National Broadband Plan Implementation (28 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: I have followed the issue. When will this come before the European Commission? I know why it must go before the European Commission and that work is ongoing. In my previous comments I asked when it would come before the European Commission. Why was it not put in the April 2014 announcement that this would have to go before the European Commission? This is probably one of the most...

- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Electricity Transmission Network (28 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: According to the information presented by the chief executive of EirGrid to the committee last Tuesday, one ducting would be needed in the channel for grid west and grid south and all that is needed to underground the North-South interconnector is a second one. I asked him about the technical issues arising because for the last several years EirGrid has argued that it is not technically...

- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Electricity Transmission Network (28 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: The report that was published, as I understand it, has options for undergrounding and made clear that Grid West and Grid South can be undergrounded. Why can this not be done with the North-South interconnector? This has been a huge bone of contention, particularly in Cavan, Monaghan and Meath in recent years. Last week representatives from EirGrid appeared before the Joint Committee on...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Alcohol Consumption: BT Young Scientist Winners (23 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: I welcome Ian and Eimear to the committee and congratulate them on their fantastic achievement in winning the Young Scientist of the Year award last January. I say this with some emotion because their families are present today and I have known them extremely well for many years. The award gives the witnesses a great opportunity. They have achieved a great deal. In the last line of...
- Written Answers — Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources: Television Licence Fee Collection (23 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: 193. To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources his plans to address the situation where persons who own a caravan or mobile home for holidays require a separate television licence for same, even when they take a television from their own home to use during holidays; if this rule applies to tourists who use caravans or camper vans; and if he will make a statement on...
- Self-Employed and the SME Sector: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (22 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: I welcome the opportunity to speak and compliment Deputy Calleary on tabling this timely motion. I want to deal with a number of issues. I refer to the self-employed and the difficulties they experience if they run into trouble and have to look for social welfare. An innovative idea was introduced in 1988 by the then Fianna Fáil Government, that is, PRSI for the self-employed. At...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: I refer to the question to which the Chairman alluded. It seems that the company has done a U-turn with regard to the Grid West and the Grid Link south. When it is good enough for Grid West and Grid Link south, why is it not good enough for the people in the path of the North-South interconnector? There is significant disquiet in this regard. There is also significant scepticism with...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: The figure of six times the cost was bandied about prior to a Dáil debate we had in 2013 regarding the North-South interconnector. Was that ever a reality? I made the point earlier that the communities in the path of the North-South connector will ask why putting the cables underground is not being considered for this project when it is being considered for the other two projects....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: Can Mr. Slye explain how technically different it is so that we can have a full grasp of what is proposed?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: Excuse my ignorance, but Mr. Slye is talking about a larger capacity. The same mechanical and engineering works would have to be carried out, whether it involves 700 MW or 1,500 MW, and it is only the capacity that would have to be enlarged.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)
Michael Moynihan: Am I to understand that this would involve putting down two cables instead of one?
