Michael McCarthy: It was at the Ard-Fheis.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I support the sentiments expressed by Senator Brian Hayes. Nobody doubts that the anniversary in 2016 will be a significant historical event. The manner in which the announcement was made and the lack of all-party consultation are the real issues. I speak as a member of the only political party that existed in 1916. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael did not exist then. The Army is the Army of the...

- Seanad: Child Care Services: Motion. (26 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: Government inaction.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: The sheer horror and injustice of the catalogue of events described in the Ferns report appalled everybody. I wish to single out two people in particular, Colm O'Gorman of the One in Four organisation and Bishop Eamonn Walsh, whom Mr. O'Gorman has justifiably praised for the painstaking work he has done in the diocese over the past two years. I support calls for a debate on this issue. I know...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I raised the issue I am about to raise now on the Order of Business yesterday. It concerns a four year old, Great Agbonlahor, and this is a picture of him.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I accept the Chair's ruling. This four year old boy is autistic and is now in foster care. The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform is to be commended on ordering a reprieve of one week in regard to the deportation of his family. This boy is receiving one-to-one tuition, he has a classroom assistant and is being cared for. If he goes back to Nigeria he will not get that assistance....
- Seanad: Home Help Service: Motion. (19 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I support the motion and welcome that we are debating an extremely important issue. I do not believe there is anybody who cannot attest to the wonderful service provided by many people to many homes throughout the country. The service has been developed in recent years and thankfully our economy is now sufficiently buoyant to allow us to do so. It began with the helpers being paid a pittance....
- Seanad: Salmon Fisheries Report: Statements. (19 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I wish to share my time with Senator Norris.
- Seanad: Salmon Fisheries Report: Statements. (19 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources to the House and am pleased that we are debating such an important issue. It has received some attention in media circles in recent times for very good reason. One can see that it is not as simple as it might initially appear.
- Seanad: Salmon Fisheries Report: Statements. (19 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: The issue is not as simple as one might assume, although no one in this House has suggested it is simple. It is a fraught and complex one. I am not going to lecture the Minister of State, Deputy Gallagher, who comes from a strong fishing constituency and has vast political experience on the finer details of the issues. The committee referred to a perceived imminent and ongoing threat to...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I wish to raise the case of Olivia Agbonlahor, the Nigerian lady who was residing in The Lodge in Clonakilty and who was collected by gardaà from Bandon Garda station yesterday morning. The Minister has now intervened to halt her deportation. She and her journalist husband fled Nigeria because he wrote about the activities of local drug dealers. She sought refuge in this country. She has...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: It is scandalous.
- Seanad: Domestic Violence: Statements. (13 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Domestic Violence: Statements. (13 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I thank the Leader and the Senators who pursued this issue for ensuring this important debate took place. Domestic violence is a serious issue. We do not know what goes on behind people's doors from the time they close them at night to coming out the following day. The situation has been and remains merciless and traumatic for the hundreds and thousands of women, in particular, who have been...
- Seanad: Domestic Violence: Statements. (13 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: The authority claims that it cannot help the woman in question because she is a joint tenant of a local authority house, along with a thug who has perpetrated evil acts against her. I have tried to convince the local authority to examine the case with the humanity it demands and to give the woman a house on the basis of her needs. She is currently in rented accommodation, which offers her a...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Oct 2005)
Michael McCarthy: I support Senator Brian Hayes's remarks in respect of yesterday's paltry damages award to Mr. Frank Shortt and his family. Members should not forget the misery to which these people were subjected by members of the Garda SÃochána, who had nothing but career advancement in mind when they intentionally harangued, hounded, abused and ultimately framed family members for offences of which they...
