Seanad: Order of Business (21 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: I wish to join others in congratulating the Government on the very professional handling of the visit to Ireland by the Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping. It was a wonderful occasion and it will have long-term effects on trade. A proposed trading hub for Chinese products in Athlone will create 2,500 jobs. I hope that will go through. The GAA played a very important role in welcoming the...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: I am in favour of rural dwellers being treated the same as city dwellers, who do not face charges for dealing with sewage. This is a very important issue. The Minister will lay down regulations. It is quite obvious to me that very few people will put their neck into the noose by registering for the septic tank charges. When one goes down that road one is inviting an inspection and the...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: I have not registered yet.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: There is no process for registration.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: I convey the view of the electorate to the Minister that he had better come up with a grand scheme for the upgrading of septic tanks, otherwise the scheme is doomed to failure.

Seanad: EU Fiscal Compact Treaty: Statements, Questions and Answers (Resumed) (16 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: "Not a cent" sounds to me like a commitment to default.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: I am delighted Senator Rónán Mullen dealt with the following issue so well and I agree totally with him. I call for a debate on the decision of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Deputy Eamon Gilmore, to unilaterally close our embassy to the Holy See at Villa Spada in the Vatican. In a statement yesterday the highly experienced former Secretary General of the Department of...

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: I have put the question and stated my view that it is a vindictive, Labour Party agenda.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: My question to him is simple. It is such an important issue that there must be a debate on it in the House. I call on the Minister to come to the House-----

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: -----specifically to discuss the question of the closure of the embassy to the Holy See. This morning there was a chink of light when he said he was reviewing the matter. He is making an excuse about Villa Spada in which I had a private audience with the late Pope John Paul II when I met him in Rome.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: Let us be clear on it. I know the Cathaoirleach was very much in favour of the embassy to the Holy See remaining open.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: I strongly encourage Fine Gael Senators and Deputies to continue their campaign, as they will win. They have to bring this section of the Government to heel because it is anti-----

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: Does the Cathaoirleach realise-----

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: I have. There must be a debate on the issue.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: This is a democracy. The Government is trying to suppress debate in the House.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: Does anyone realise how significant it is to have an embassy and a permanent ambassador resident in Rome?

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2012)

Terry Leyden: It does not matter if the ambassador is living in a small apartment. He or she does not need to live in Villa Spada which could be used by the Irish Embassy to Italy. We have two ambassadors in France, one in Paris and the other in Strasbourg dealing with the Council of Europe.
