Seanad: An Bille um an gCeathrú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Comhionannas Pósta) 2015: Céim an Choiste - Thirty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution (Marriage Equality) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (27 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: I will be brief. I always listen with great interest to Senator Mullen. While I may not agree with him, he is articulate in the expression of his opinions. His comments on the Constitutional Convention are regrettable, however. Two thirds of the convention were selected by lot from the electoral register. Sixty-six of the 100 people on the convention had no involvement in politics...

Martin Conway: The convention's members spoke and gave of their time voluntarily. The 33 Oireachtas Members came from across the political divide. Impugning the work done by the convention on our behalf was regrettable.

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: What is the relevance of this? This relates to a different section.

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: I take exception to the word "bullying" being dragged into the debate by any Member of this House. It is unbecoming of Senator Walsh, to be quite honest. I would expect more from him. I would also point out that what Senator Healy Eames is referring to is for a later section of the Bill. To be quite frank with her, she is trying to confuse everybody. Nobody seems to know what she is...

Martin Conway: Withdraw that immediately.

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Mar 2015)

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: Well said. I agree.

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: I reiterate what Senator Bacik said.Having participated in the hearings on the Bill as a member of the Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality, I have concluded that it strikes the correct balance. I concur with Senator Mullen and other speakers on the use of language in this debate. I have known the Senator for many years and have always found him to be utterly respectful of...

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: I am not happy with intimidation.

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: She would not be the Minister for Justice and Equality unless she had stamina.

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Committee Stage (26 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: I have a lot of sympathy with Senator Walsh and Dr. Rose on this matter. The assisted human reproduction legislation is currently being drafted, but I have no doubt that it will be referred to the Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality for consideration. I have heard Dr. Rose speak before.I would certainly be happy for her to come and give evidence. I would be happy to propose that. I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Annual Policing Plan 2015: Garda Commissioner (25 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: I congratulate the Commissioner on her appointment and thank her for a comprehensive presentation. She has hit the ground running in regard to where she is bringing the force. Does she envisage recommending to the Government the closure of any more rural Garda stations in the next year or two?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Annual Policing Plan 2015: Garda Commissioner (25 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: That is good to know. The Commissioner spoke about the victims of crime. In the UK a system is in place whereby victims can track their crimes online. That seems to be working very well and it has instilled confidence in victims of crime in that country. Are there plans to introduce something similar in Ireland?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Annual Policing Plan 2015: Garda Commissioner (25 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: The Commissioner referred to the threat of international terrorism. Does she think that threat has increased in this country, is she concerned about it and does she think the Government is providing the necessary support to counteract it?

Seanad: An Bille um an gCeathrú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Comhionannas Pósta) 2015: An Dara Céim - Thirty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution (Marriage Equality) Bill 2015: Second Stage (25 Mar 2015)

Martin Conway: Hear, hear.

Martin Conway: Senator Power is dead right.

Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister for Justice and Equality to the House. Twice this week, I have stood up to agree wholeheartedly with Senator Power. That is the way politics should be in this country. I appreciated her testimonial and contribution on what is a ground-breaking Bill. The referendum which will follow this will be ground-breaking too. I have no doubt the Minister is very proud to put...

Martin Conway: With that in mind, I wish the Minister well in this endeavour. Obviously the waters will be muddied by people who have the cheek and the ignorance to connect children with this issue. This has nothing to do with children. That will be dealt with by other Bills going through the Houses. It is unfair that, like in similar referendums, a little issue is picked and developed to confuse and to...
