Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Climate Action Plan and its Implications for the Agriculture Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (4 May 2021)

Jackie Cahill: I thank the witnesses for their interpretation of the climate action plan. Having stayed quiet during the meeting, I will now make a few comments. As most people will be aware, I am a farmer and I want the next generation to farm my land. While we have to be acutely aware of climate sustainability, economic sustainability for farmers and rural Ireland cannot be dismissed either. I was...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Facilities (29 Apr 2021)

Jackie Cahill: I thank the Ceann Comhairle for picking this Topical Issue and giving us an opportunity to discuss it, and I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Rabbitte, for attending. I visited Cappagh hospital earlier this week and received a briefing from its chief executive, Ms Angela Lee, and one of its surgeons, Mr. Connor Green. Its excellence, capacity, figures and results are phenomenal but it...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Facilities (29 Apr 2021)

Jackie Cahill: Deputy Brendan Smith has put it well. Detailed plans have been drawn up for a modern unit. Unfortunately, the current infrastructure will not meet HIQA's standards in future. Investment is essential. The hospital has a tremendous record. It breaks even every year and sees a significant throughput. Its figures are the envy of other hospitals within the health service. We can make a...

Covid-19, Mental Health and Older People: Statements (29 Apr 2021)

Jackie Cahill: The Covid pandemic has brought enormous challenges in the mental health sector. I acknowledge the considerable effort the Minister of State, Deputy Butler, has put into the Jigsaw centre in Thurles since she took office in July 2020. I have been working on this issue since I was first elected in 2016 and it is extremely important for our county. Although the date for opening the centre has...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Regulation of Veterinary Medicines: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Apr 2021)

Jackie Cahill: I will go back to a point Senator Daly made. In practice, out there on farms, especially, say, from the last week of January to now, there is lambing going on, an awful lot of calving going on and cows with mastitis. On a dairy farm, at seven or eight o'clock in the evening, the farmer will be milking his cows under an awful lot of pressure for labour. How will the service be provided such...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Regulation of Veterinary Medicines: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Apr 2021)

Jackie Cahill: May I put a supplementary question to Ms Muldoon following what she said there? From what I hear her saying, the farmer would have to be able to converse with his vet to get the product he needs. Let us take a Sunday evening or Sunday night, at eight or nine o'clock. In the vast majority of practice, vets operate on a rota and only one will be on call. A lot of the time he will be out...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Regulation of Veterinary Medicines: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Apr 2021)

Jackie Cahill: This issue has had an awful lot of debate at this committee. There is serious unease about how it will work in practice on farms. As Deputy Ring said, there is a financial worry but we also have a welfare worry about how more regulation will benefit. We are very concerned about it.

Jackie Cahill: I acknowledge the exceptional effort the Government has made in recent months to pump finances into our national economy in an effort to save jobs and protect businesses. In doing so, the Government has supported businesses and undeniably saved jobs, helping to prevent tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands from having to sign on the live register throughout the country. I...
